28 years of guzzling gas and counting..

Recently I found myself becoming the owner 1982 Z28 Camaro. She aint the prettiest, but she runs fairly consistently and came at a fair price. I was wondering though, what are the best ways to improve fuel mileage in these cars? She's completely stock, and gets a wonderous 14mpg on the highway. I know I shouldnt expect prius-esque figures, but any improvement is an improvement nonetheless. I thought a good start would be ditching the stock carb. Good call?

The best mods first would be over all tune-up, then high flow exhaust and cat, you cant beat the stock carb for mpg they have small primary's so when your crusin it uses less fuel

Not the autos, but it should have the lockup converter. I was getting about 21-22 on the highway with 3.42 gears and a non-lockup converter. Also had a comp cams XE256, headers, 3 inch single exhaust, performer intake and a Holley carb. The stock camshaft wouldn't hardly do anything above 3000 rpm, turns out it had 4 flat lobes.

My 2.8mpfi gets about the same that's why I'm trashing it. I control Lockup through the ALDL when cruising in 3 or 4 gear. Its got a new maf new tps...cts is good...new plugs wires cap and rotor. Vacuum is good but the last time I changed the plugs they had an brown tint with gray ashy deposits around the electrode.

Re: 28 years of guzzling gas and counting..

I appreciate your help. I've already started planning a bit with what I want to do. How complicated is the swap to LT1 disk brakes? What size holley carb were you using, evilcartman? I've played with small block fords a bit, but chevy's are a different animal. Any advice is appreciated as to what would be good mods to make moderate horsepower (300hp) and maybe remotely decent gas mileage. Even 20 would be amazing. And thanks in advance.
