Stupid question about the location of engine ID
So I have a 3970010 block in my 82 trans am. I want to find out more information while the engine is still in the car. I know I can check the stroke to find out exactly what CID it is. I've heard of a plate in front of the passenger head with the engine ID stamped on it but I cant find anything. I ripped the alternator off and everything. All I see Is a "G" that was cast into it, not stamped, on the head itself. Am I not seeing the damn thing or what? Is there another way to find all the info on this block?

In front of the passenger head on the block theres a machined area that has some letters and numbers stamped into it. it will tell you what it came out of and ci when you run it online.

Yeah I've heard that a lot but I'm not finding anything. Any other ways to tell?

Re: Stupid question about the location of engine ID
Alright. Well I was looking for it at 2 in the morning and then there were shots fired in my neighborhood. I'll look tonight when I get home from work. Thanks.

Re: Stupid question about the location of engine ID
It'll only tell you what the engine was originally, which isn't necessarily anything like what it is now.

Yeah, but it will give me a better idea of what I want to do with the thing. I wanna know specifics before I start modifications. The guy who owned the car before me was kind of dumb and "not so practical" with his setup. Regardless, I got the car with that motor and an extra 305 on a stand for 300 bucks total. fun summer ahead of me.

Re: Stupid question about the location of engine ID
So far, all you know is that you have an 010 block. All that means is it's a 4" bore block. That casting was used on 302, 327 and 350 engines but there's a good chance it's only a 350 since millions of them were made during the time that casting was in use.
Without pulling a head off, you won't know if it was ever bored out or not. Since it's not in the original vehicle, anything could have been done internally.

Not true... If you can read the Block Suffix Codes that are stamped in front of the head. It will tell you CI and what HP and what it came out of.
heres a pretty good site. http://www.73-87.com/chevy_ids/sbcid2.htm

Re: Stupid question about the location of engine ID
It may not have the original heads. It may have been bored out. It may not have the original camshaft. All the suffix code will tell you is what it originally came from and what the original rating was.
