Re: valve stem seals?

Youll be fine. As the motor heats up the stems grow in the seals. And seal better. Youll be fine!

You never have to change them if you don't mind the startup puff.

Re: valve stem seals?

technically hes right. oil only gets past the seals when its cold and only a verry small amount. you can drive the car for the rest of its life and not worry about em. and no problem man.

Re: valve stem seals?

i have this problem as well. i was wondering. if the seals arent warmed up, like when i first start the car, could this make it harder for the car to start?

my car starts fine if it runs for a couple minutes but when i go to it in the morning it doesnt like to start instantly

Re: valve stem seals?

Valve Seals no bad fuel check valve or leaky injector yes its allowing fuel to empty the system and the prime at key on is not effective enough to refill it

Re: valve stem seals?

ive got the same issue going on as well. my car has been running pretty crappy and i was told it was valve seals in cylinder 1 & 7 that are bad. i need to swap out the spark plugs every couple weeks to keep it running ok and it burns up oil and leaks oil pretty quickly. when i step on the gas it wants to stall but from the info in the thread i feel like ive got a bigger problem. any ideas?

sabresfan:

Is it blowing smoke all the time, or just on startup? When was the last tuneup?

Re: valve stem seals?

Probably more leak than burn then, have to track down the leaks. Are the plugs fouled with oil (seals or blowby problem), or soot (mixture problem)? Any oil in the intake?

Re: valve stem seals?

Ok, possibilities off the top of my head:

* Valve seals as mentioned.

* Excessive blowby forcing oil back thru the pcv valve, into the intake.

* Intake gaskets leaking from inside the valley.

* Non-taper seat plugs, or plugs loose, letting oil wick down from leaky valve covers.
