85 IROC engine dies

Hi all. I've been reading through threads and posts to try and come up with a solution to my problem. I've an 85 305 TPI IROC-Z w/ 50k miles, of which I am the original owner. I know its history, mostly all good. She sat for quite awhile in a garage. About 3 years ago got her up and running again. Changed all the fluids, filters, belts and hoses, new plugs / wires and put Accel super coil in the dist. cap. After making sure she ran okay upgraded to Hypertech chip and thermostat, and put in adjustable temp. fan control. She was running better than new. I only use her on weekends or when the weather is really nice. Twice last year while stopping at a red light she died. Restarted okay and never had any other problems. Garaged all winter. Took her out a few times this year and all was well. Just recently while driving along she just died. When I say just died I mean there was no sputtering or fussing or chugging, bucking poor acceleration nothing like that...JUST died. I was able to coast to the side of the road and she restarted and ran like there was nothing wrong. No CEL. Drove on furhter down the road and happened again. Went to a place just to sit for a few minutes. Started up and drove to the edge of parking area and died again. This time wouldn't restart for about 10 minutes. Finally started and decided to go straight home. Ran fine. Pulled in my driveway and died again. Had to pick up my daughter at her friends house and decided to try again. Started and ran fine. The house is about 5 minutes away. On the way back started to buck and jerk and run very erratic and rough. Barely made it home. Died when I pulled in the driveway. Put her in the garage. Started about a week later and ran fine. Let it run for about 3 minutes. Today I figured i would go out and check out the situation. Pulled off MAP and looked inside clean. Shot some carb clener in just for good measure. Started her up and ran absolutely fine. Tried tapping the MAF, TPS and IAC sensors -- no issues. Let her idle about 10 minutes and she died flat. Again no hint or warning, just as if you turned off the key. Started and ran fine. About 5 mins. died. Started again, died again. Next restart took a bit longer but she ran and ided almost immediatley. Now, no start. Turns over really easy and fast as if no compression. I thought gas or spark. But I can hear the fuel pump run and build pressure, so i ruled out gas as an issue. My thinking is electrical --- spark or ecm??? Again, no check engine light or codes stored. Before i start throwing money at replacing sensors and the like thought i would get some input from my fellow Camaro owners. Any input would greatly appreciated.

I am going to venture a guess that it is the ignition module. Try removing it and replacing it with another see what results you have.

I agree that it's likely the ignition module. Check spark while cranking. The ACCEL coil draws higher current than the stock coil and stresses the module.

Re: 85 IROC engine dies

I expierenced a problem recently where my engine would randomly cut out and jerk and loose power, however it wouldnt die. My first guess is that it would be you Ignition control module. Did you install your distributor cap? If you did you might want to pull it and check for corrosion on the 8 power metal power strips located inside the cap. I have heard of caps getting put on slightly askew and having that happen. However I would try your ICM first. Its not a real expensive part which is the plus side

Re: 85 IROC engine dies

thank you all for your replies. i was kind of hoping it was just the moule and not the main computer. i will try to replace that first and take it from there. just curious why there wouldn't be a code stored or check engine light triggered.

@ ASE doc....good point about the accel coil, i should maybe get a better ignition module....

Re: 85 IROC engine dies

The ACCEL and/or MSD coils are designed to work with either the 300+ or MSD ignition control modules. The module takes the load of the coil using the factory module only as a crank reference input. In this system, the distributor mounted module will last virtually forever.

Re: 85 IROC engine dies

i was thinking of the accel igniton control mod 35363 to replace factory one in distrib. wouldn't this be sufficient? i'm not racing. let me know you thoughts, please.

Re: 85 IROC engine dies

I would lean towards MSD for ignition parts. (Please ignore the fact that I run ACCEL DFI in my beast. It was made before ACCEL became a subsidiary of Mr. Gasket.) I have not been impressed with the reliability of ACCEL ignition parts.
