replacing icm

So to replace the icm I am going to need to take the distributor cap off, what's the best way to mark it to make sure I get it back on correctly- at least close enuff so then I can tweak it?

The cap only goes on correctly one way, so no need to mark anything. Making sure the plug wires get back in the same places is the important part

You don't need to remove the plugs, but you probably need to remove the plug wires from the cap to get it off. This is pretty easy, you can do it if you have any kind of mechanical ability at all, and a little organization and patience. What kind of engine is this you're working on?

Henry3d thanks, I can't tell u as a single mom how great u guys are! its a 92 camaro v8 5.7 ok so I could put a piece of tape with the plug number on it?

That's one way that will work. Do you have a Chiltons or similar manual to use for reference? Not the best, but a good starting point for most basic operations like this. So you have a Z-28 with a TPI motor with the distributor under a cover at the back of the engine, or is it exposed where you can see it? And BTW, why are you changing the module?

Henry3d thanks, I did have a manual but it was taken. I have a schematic of the plugs if that's what I need? The reason I am replacing the icm is bcse the car will run vroom vroom vroom and then go vroom sputter and then more sputter as if its flooding and then it will stall and not start for hours and hours and then do the same. Its a regular distributor behind the air filter its not fuel injected its a v8 5.7 I have had the whole fuel system changed out twice, plugs, wires etc etc.

Yeah, sounds like a possibility that's your problem. Yes, as long as you write down which # plug wire goes on which pole on the cap and you can identify the wires either by labeling or if they're original or Delco they may already be numbered for you, getting them back in the right place shouldn't be a problem. So it's take off cap, remove rotor(checking both for unusual wear), unplugging and then unscrewing module from the dist and removal. Be sure and coat the bottom of the module with the dielectric grease that is supplied with it before installing, or you invite early module failure. Reverse steps and you should be good. Manuals are good to have and cost about $20 at most parts stores. So your car is carbed now, with a coil-in-cap distributor ? Good luck with this, just be careful not to drop the tiny screws

Cars don't respond all that well to sitting around for long periods of time. Well, good thing there's a TGO to help you out. I know some stuff, but little about carbs. Fortunately lots of people here do. Do you have a mechanical or leftover electric fuel pump in the car?

Unless you know that you (or someone else) changed to a carb setup, it's probably a TBI car - the TBI unit looks just like a carb, but has 2 injectors inside, and in which case it's probably a 305 (5.0) motor and not a 350 (5.7).

You can just take a sharpie, and mark on the dist cap numbers at each wire, and mark the same numbers on each wire boot.
