Can't Install Pilot Bearing?

I am trying to install my new pilot bearing from Fortes parts for my TKO 600 and it will not go in all the way. It has about 1/4 inch until it sits flush with the crankshaft. Any ideas?

Did you get the right one? Seems to me there's an 'extended' one for LS1 transmissions or something...don't recall.

Re: Can't Install Pilot Bearing?

I have the one that Forte's parts supplies with their TKO 600 kit.

Are they different for 1 and 2 piece rear main seal crankshaft?

Re: Can't Install Pilot Bearing?

Flush with the bottom of the crank hole, or flush with the top of the crank hole/crank flange? I've always done mine flush with the top of the crank hole.

I just did mine a couple weeks back, and I seem to recall the last 1/4 or so being the hardest. I needed a bigger BFH to achieve the same amount of movement per blow. Makes sense, though, you are fighting that much more friction after each blow that gets it in there deeper.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Can't Install Pilot Bearing?

Should look roughly like this when installed.

Should be slightly less tall than its diameter. If it's taller than that, you have the wrong one. If it's the right one, use more force. I use a fairly massive BFH and a brass drift that's about 1¼" diameter.

Re: Can't Install Pilot Bearing?

Well mine definetly isn't that far in yet. I am using a mini sledge hammer and a socket on an extension and I can't hit it in any more. I tried using the grease method to pull it back out and it wouldn't even come out.

Re: Can't Install Pilot Bearing?

I believe to get these things in and out you have to use at a minimum 38 curse words... one thing you can do is measure the depth of the hole and height of the bushing. Good luck!
