please help! car wont start need ideas

I have a 86 iroc and just recently I swaped out the steering column for a new one with a airbag and vats key will that key in any way affect why I am not able to start my car?

The problem is this when I turn the key all the lights and everything works and I hear the fuel pump turn on but when I turn the key to start the car nothing happens starter won't turn over or click or anything what could be the problem?

I took the starter out to have it checked but it passed and the guy from autozone said I should have the solenoid checked out.. could that be the problem or is it a problem with the steering column?? Please reply I want to fix this problem and get the car running as soon as possible thanks!

Check your wiring connection on the steering column. We had an 86 z28 that would do exactly as your is doing when the wheel was tilted up. When we tilted the wheel down, presto!... started every time. Turned out it was a loose connection.

I'm still not sure if its the steering column itself because it is a airbag with the vats chip in it n my car originally never had vats I'm effin confused =\

VATS is part of the computer program and since yours didn't have VATS, it won't have any affect on it. I assume the connector on the new column matched up directly with the wiring in the car?

Re: please help! car wont start need ideas

This sounds like a connection issue. The starter pulls a really high amperage, and all that juice has to get back to the battery. Something seemingly small can tip the resistance just high enough to induce this. I had one frame ground (~20ga. wire) break off on my truck and it wouldn't start for two weeks until I figured out to run a cable from the starter to the battery.

If it isn't a column connection, hook a jumper cable from one of the starter bolts and run it to the neg batt terminal. Should complete the connection.

wire a push button start switch in it, run it directly from the battery to the selenoid, see if it starts, i had the push button start and i liked it, i ran an inline fuse with it.

if the guy at autozone is telling you you should have your starter solenoid checked after testing your starter, don't go back to that autozone. the starter solenoid is mounted on the starter and has to be tested with the starter.

also, a starter can test good on the bench and still be bad. something those "techs" at autozone don't seem to understand and won't tell you.

i agrere with thhe other posters that it does sound like a wiring issue though. just curious as to why you changed the column. did the condition exist with the previous one?

The last column was all jacked up the steering wheel was all over the place cuz it was loose n the guy I got it from said he got it diagnosed n they told him it needed a new column so I got a new one but its still doing the same thing it won't crank the starter and I still don't kno if it has to do with the new column I put in cuz its from a late model 90-92 camaro

Re: please help! car wont start need ideas

The vats column has an orange wire that connects to vats under the kickpanel(above the wheels) but since you dont have vats...it shouldn't be a problem!

Check your starter enable relay maybe you accidental knocked it out by accident when changing the column..
