ignition switch?
On my 82 ta when I turn the key nothing happens, I have a dome light and headlights come on but won't rotate to up position. I have removed and checked the alternator, battery and charged it fully to make sure.
it has a new starter.
when I turn the key the lights do NOT dim so i'm thinking it's the ignition switch.
What is the procedure for replacing the switch, is it much trouble?

Remove under dash panel
Two large nuts, hold the bracket for under dash panel - remove
Two more large nuts, hold steering column up to dash - remove and let column drop as far as wires will allow.
You'll see the ignition switch on top of the steering column - if an automatic you have to remove the back half from the switch before you can remove the switch from the column.
Before you go throug all this - I'd get a VOM and read: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38

Re: ignition switch?
One more thing that bugs me, why won't the headlights open up with this problem, the lights come on but don't turn up.
Are the controlled somehow with the ignition?

Re: ignition switch?
I have a question. I have a '92 camaro RS and majority of the times it doesn't start. I have a new alternator, a good battery, and good starter (took them to auto zone). When i try to start it just makes a click noise and the lights and radio usually come on. Those times when it won't start, the oil gauge is low for some odd reason even though there's nothing wrong with the oil. Also when its low i get jump starts and it works but as soon as i turn it off it wont start back up again. I heard it could be the ignition switch but i don't understand how the ignition would affect the oil meter. What do you think could be the problem??

Re: ignition switch?
It was my experience with my '91, that the ignition switch having issues and going out, will not allow the vehicle to start, BUT does allow SOME ACC power. I had dome lights, radio, SOME gauges, turn signals, but nothing else. I replaced the ignition switch, but I apparently had other issues as well. I had to replace my steering column, due to the rod was not making connection to the key cylinder all the time. I also apparently had a broken wire inside the insulation areoun the coil wire. I would imagine that my additional issues are not similar to your, fortunately for you.
Replacing the ignition switch wasnt as bad and difficult as I expected. Hopefully that is your only issue. Since I have basically replaced my entire ignition system, hopefully I can assist you with your issues

Re: ignition switch?
i have the same problem, car started fine made 2 stops on the 3rd stop i come out and car would not start. it could be the Ignition switch now i am reading it could be the wires to the starter. but the starter kicks over when place a screw drive to the battery wire to the soleniod lead. maybe my problem is the ignition switch.....

After you complete your Profile Info (so we know what you're working on) you should understand that just because the starter works when you bypass it doesn't mean you have all the wires connected to it or that they're tight or that you don't have a blown fusible link. The starter motor acts as a junction point for several positive wires to connect to each other.

Re: ignition switch?
Ok so I have a 1989 camaro RS with a 305. And one day when I parked it I turned the key off but the security light stayed on and the Ecm started smoking. Now I can’t get it to start at all. I replaced the ignition cylinder but that didn’t help. What do y’all suggest?

new ecm ? Have you verified the power wires and grounds at the ecm ?
there is a inline fuse next to the battery.

Re: ignition switch?
I have the same dilemma with my, blasted ignition start switch. I had one of the red wires that attach to the starter cut and not connected, yet it worked fine for years? I read here one installs both on the battery side of the starter solenoid I did that, and still it would not start. Im changing the the switch at the column now. Anyone know of how my car started without that other red wire being installed on the starter?
