Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

Haha good attention getting thread name.

Soo good morning or night whatever is going down at your location. These are some pictures of my 1985 Camaro 5.0 TPI ecm pcb board. I will start from the beginning, months back the fuel pump would start to whine after some time driving. It wouldn’t kill the car or anything it just made some noise. The other issue it would have is after long drives the CEL would pop on and flicker and go off then back on as I would give it throttle. But it would dim when letting off the throttle. Real odd like. So I pulled the code and it was 13. So it slowly progressed into the car not being operational with no extra codes. It would just pop and sputter then die after about 2 min of runtime. Then sometimes it would last longer.

So I parked the car for a couple months because of some motorcycle projects and now I am back on the Camaro. I decided the loud fuel pump needed replacement first regardless of other issues. So I replaced that and the regulator and filter. Same thing car would start then just die WTF?? Like no fuel lean popping. Now I was thinking well maybe ignition module?? So I did that and cap rotor and coil. Start it up same damn thing..

no codes to look at still. So I do a running diagnostic test and the light blinks 2 times a second. So that’s fuel pulse issues I think. So bam ECM issues. Pull the ecm and I see this. So I say what the hell and pop a rebuilt cardon in there. It smokes the same chip in seconds of running the car. It ran perfect before it smoked the chip. For like 1 minute lol

And as for grounded wire to find this is the only problem child I could find after exhausting hours of search time

Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

Just hoping maybe a old GM employee for the pcb board construction team is trolling this forum and sees this and knows this is his time to shine bright lol

Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

That is one of the two driver chips for solenoids/relays. Need to measure the solenoids resistances to find out which one is bad. Any that are lower then 22 ohms is bad, but you will likely find it real low in resistance. Solenoids & other driven devices:

CCP solenoid
EGR solenoid
AIR to port solenoid
AIR to switch solenoid
Cooling fan relay
TCC solenoid
SES light

Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

EGR=19.1 so that’s bad
And look at this coolant fan relay wow

Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

Coolant fan relay still looks good at 60 ohms, throw that bad boy back in hahah. Still hunting for more fun to be had.

Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

Almost forgot the previous owner took the power to the fan relay and put it on the battery with two 30 amp fuses. I don’t know why exactly for this yet

Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

Question RBob, could the vss buffer box do this?

The evap charcoal canister tested at 24.8 ohms. So I think I am gonna replace that too.
both AIR are at 34 ohm

And how how would one check the SES light? And the TCC ? Just the plug on the transmission.

Re: 1985 Camaro ECM fire!!!

hello all, so i was able to get all those relays in and now i am not burning the driver chip in the ecm. the bad thing still almost the same symptoms, it will run for a few seconds or a minute then sputter and die, giving it throttle just makes things worse. one time it ran super smooth for a few minutes to get to temp it smelt lean during this, I turned it off because i knew it wasnt right. And if I disconnect the MAF the car runs the same as if it was plugged in. Makes me thing the burn off is bad
well now i am to the burn off relay. this sucks lol.. no codes to go off and shooting from the hip.

so on the back of the relay on the pcb board the circuit ribbons are burned around the solder points, is this normal?

and i checked the relay and its 1.0 ohms?? good ? bad?

any suggestions would be helpful. at this point i might just buy a burn off just to try. thanks in advance

spark plug wires
ignition modual
fuel pump
fuel regulator
trans clutch solenoid
evap can solenoid
