Hi guys I have a 89 camaro 2.8 a boutique 3 days ago I decided to put on a new water pump because mine was leaking really bad. That was a experience because of the torx heads any way I got the whole thing back together and ended up with 2 new problems the coolent stoped leaking but I am getting zero battery charge and there is some metallic sound coming from under the hood I keep checking my work and every thing is nice and tight. I had the battery checked a while back ago and they said the battery was bad. Is it possible for a battery to except no new charge and the alternator be ok or is it a loose wire and what could be making that metallic sound it only happens at above 3000 and it gets louder the higher the engine revs

 

Have your alterrnator tested at autozone or advanced auto. You can hook up a volt meter to the battery while the engine is running, should be around 13.3-14.5 volts. If the battery was tested bad, then change it. It can make an alternator work too hard & overheat it.
About the noise, I'd 1st remove the drive belt & run the engine briefly, to see if it goes away. If it does then check each accesory for rough or loose bearings.

1. Change your battery Lazy8 - if it's 'bad' of course it won't charge.
2. Metallic noise - need to narrow it down closer than 'under the hood'. Eg bottom end, top end, left/right side, accessories etc. Maybe an overstressed alt trying to charge a bad battery.

 

It sort of sounds like metal slapping against metal and it is coming from the accessories as for the charging issue When I jump the car the voltage slowly drops until there is nothing at all. When the car is running it is running on the energy being supplied by the alternator right? Or is the battery in some way affecting the alternator's job of supplying the engine with power?

 

Yes, the alternator should be supplying all of the car's running needs. If not, the battery will be kicking in the difference, lose charge, and eventually go flat. The batt is there to supply the massive current needed for starting, and help regulate any ripple from the alternator.

If the battery has say an internal short or conductive deposits between plates, it will not hold capacity and may drag the alt down with it - screaming in full excitation in a vain attempt to keep the batt topped up. I've lost an alt this way before.

Change your bad battery out - just borrow one if you can for test purposes if you can't afford a new one atm. Pull off the belt(s) like advised up in post 2, run it briefly so you don't overheat it and see if the noise goes.
