Steering column question -- works fine, but tilt steering has play in it

This may be a silly question. 84 T/A, tilt steering. The tilt works just fine, but once it's locked into place, I can still move the steering column "up" with about an inch of play. Is there a reason for this? it should be locked in with no movement right? It won't go "down" but I can move it up.

Is it possible to disassemble the column and tighten down a bolt or something?

Its usually 3 screws that loosen up, I think they are behind the turn signal switch. Sometimes they strip out, you can use epoxy to keep them in.

What is the best way to get to those screws? Pull the steering wheel?

That will help alot! Thanks!

I don't have a steering wheel puller though...or access to one. Will I still be able to remove the wheel with some elbow grease or am I stuck without it?

First post! Welcome to TGO!

You didn't check my location. I'm in the UK mate! LOL It's cool though. People here aren't cool like AZ or O'reillies. No one "rents" tools out that I've found...at least not near me. To order one puts me back another week on this and from what I"ve read, I don't know if it'll last that long.

A gear puller will pull the steering wheel, you'll need that tool to compress the locking wheel, so you can get the snap ring off.

Yeah, I got it. Neighbor had one. Took me nearly 8 hours because I was going slow and didn't want to put things in wrong. Then broke the small plastic horn button, the round piece that goes under the lock ring. It's so stupid, not even sure how it broke. Then the high beams lights didn't work, took me nearly an hour to figure out that the lever came off the switch down under the dash. I was looking for an electrical connector or something in the column. Other than that, it was fairly strait forward. I did not get the top two tightened down, but the bottom two snugged the whole thing up gut N tight.

Did the same a while back messing with a new steering wheel. I replaced the cam this summer with a bone yard piece.
