Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

Hey all, OSS here;

Ever notice whenever you're looking at an ad online, or checking out an F-Body in person, the seller always insists the car is a "305 HO"? Be it a TBI system, X-Fire, or even an LG4, lol

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

Ive noticed that too lol.

Kind of reminds me of 98% of every single 92 I see for sale, they always mention how its an Anniversary Edition We all know that all 92 were 25th Anniversary Cars, its not an edition it just means that 1992 was the 25th anniversary for the camaro in general yet the seller thinks its gonna mean an extra couple grand for his crappy purple RS.

Most sellers dont know what they hell theyre talking about anyways lol.

And from the same reoccurring problems that turn up weekly on this Forum from new owners
appears buyers are no wiser either.

Witness the number of "350" buyers who find out it is a 305

These same sellers also claim the engine has "pre-Vortec heads"

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

I think that is true with anything anyone is trying to sell. Limited edition, anniversary edition, highly collectible, one in a series, rare, etc. are all terms used to bait the buyer into thinking what the seller has is truely something amazing when it's really not. It's true for Camaros, beanie babies, die cast, baseball cards, whatever, it's all the same. The seller is merely preying on the buyers ignorance of the product.

And there's those guys who dont have regular RS camaros... they have the rare, and limited edition, perhaps even the anniversary edition "RS+".

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

cant forget about all those "vette" engines out there either. appearently they made 4x as many vette engines as they made vettes. problem is a 305 isnt much and people think slapping the "HO" in front makes it sound like its got 300hp.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

I slapped that sticker on my aftermarket chrome air cleaner cover on my LG4. I just like how it looks and says "H.O." like the "ho" that I am.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

I don't see that as much as I see everyone around here posting their third gen Camaro and Firebird stating that it has a 350 in it. I've seen one on craigslist here for an 82 or 83 Camaro stating it had a 350 and a 5 speed and he claimed it was stock. I emailed him and told him it was impossible for that to be a stock combo on an 82 and asked for pictures of the engine bay. He said "he didn't have any pictures".

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

Kindda hard to believe that he didn't have any pictures in this day and age of quick pics with our phones and other devices. Someone could have just told him that it was a 350 when in reality it's a 305 since they look the same. Oh well. Live and learn.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

most people think chevy v8=350. they just dont know any better. then there are those who know the difference, and know that most people dont, and try to sell someone a 305 claiming its a 350 from a corvette. if anyone tells me that something thier selling came from a vette, then i dont even bother to try to talk them out of thier ridiculous price into a resonable price.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

Hell, I remember when my father-in-law gave me the Formula and swore up and down that it had a 350 in it. When I pulled the motor out he didn't believe me when I told him it was just a 305. I made him drive to my house and look at the casting numbers on the back of the block and he still tried to deny it.

The reason he thought that though was because someone in the past had swapped hoods and the placard on the underside of the hood had a VIN from a 350 car and also said 5.7L on it. He never once cross checked the VIN on the windshield with the on under the hood.

Oh, he had pictures of the Camaro, just exterior and interior pics though. He just "mysteriously" didn't have pictures of the engine bay because he knew he was BS and didn't want to be called out on it.

I placed an ad the next day telling people that he was a liar. I would have felt somewhat bad for someone if they fell into his trap.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

theres a thread atleast once a month were someone buys a 3rd then posts trying to figure out what engine they have. of course they were told it was a 350, and paid more than the car was worth because of it. and dont want to accept it when they post the casting numbers and we break the bad news.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

People that really want a third gen, or any car for that matter, really need to research the vehicle fully before buying it. Yea, I myself am guilty when I bought my car and noticed the fading clear coat, the Chevrolet dealer said "just leave it, the car is going to be a classic with the original paint." Of course at that time, I could had my car repainted at no cost. Most vendors tend to lie just to unload their headache.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

How timely this thread is. There was a post a few days ago- now locked -about a guy who had an '86 Camaro H.O., 1 of 74, who wanted to know much it was worth. He had a list of add-ons but didn't list any RPO's. I think the RPO for an H.O. was L69. And I thought an '86 L69 car had manual transmission only with a standard axle ratio of 3.27 not 3.73, at least according to the book I have. Never did get to know if it was the real deal or not.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

I looked at about 7 camaros when I was looking to buy one, and out of all the bull crap people say only one of them was correct, it was "one of a kind" the previous own chopped it and took 8 inches off the car (I measured to be sure) so it had no back seats, the windows were severely cracked because he had to cut and re-bend them to fit the new door size, and there was not carpet or headliner or radio/ac, the only good thing is that it had a rebuilt 350 (saw all reciepts and old 305 in garage) and had t-top with an EXTREMELY (custom) nice paint job, if it weren't for those windows it would have been mine

But if it works, it's "ice cold." Ice cold seems to be anything coming out the ducts at 60° or less.

I think it's because almost every RPO code site list them as a HO,some sites list the LB9 and the L69 as HO's and some don't.very confusing to some people.

"Its a 100% original I-ROC"...and by looking at the pics I usually find a walmart cd player and a macco paint job with misaligned decals.

Heres another one I like and travis401 mentioned this...its got the 350 "borrowed" from the corvette. Borrowed? Really? Id hate to be the unlucky owner of said corvette.

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

They get the "borrowed" part from all the previous book writers and reviews on the third gen's with the 350. When some people see the word "Corvette" they get excited.

I forget which years they did advertise the Tuned Port F.I. 5.0 as a H.O. and did have the decal on the ground effect or the hood?

Re: Why does every seller think they have a "305 HO"?

Well I guess i got lucky on Craigslist....the add for my second third gen just read "92 Camaro, 86K, runs, 5.0, needs fan, $3000." 4 pics.

I stared at the pics a while then called the guy. Its a 92 Z28 with 5 speed and plenty of options. good paint, no rust new clutch. been sitting for 6 years.

Had been advertised for 3 months with no calls. I bought it for $2,700. Buffed the paint, replaced the exhaust, cleaned up the fuel system, and got me a decent runner.... in purple no less.

It didn't need a fan, it needed a new radiator cap to hold pressure......

He claimed to be a "car guy" but really had no clue. Fortunately, I really know third gens and studied the car, and didn't bother asking a lot of questions.
