My 89 RS cranks when it wants too. Why?
I have an 89 RS that will crank with no problem and fire right up but i can run to the store and when i come out it does nothing. I can hook jumper cables to it and it fires right up. I can drive home and it fires right up.I can let my daughter drive it to town and it doesnt crank again, and i get up there an hour later and it cranks right up.I can cut it right off and on with no problem.It seems it happens on short little runs. I have a new battery. New alternator and have took the starter out and bench tested it with no problems.I can allways let it sit an hour and it fires right up. Is it the vats ? Im lost on what to replace next, and any help would be great! Oh yeah i can sometime disconnect the battery and then hook it right back upand it fires right up!

usually if its vats it wont matter if you hook cables to it it still will not starts because its a anti-theft system.

MY bird used to do that randomly too, turned out to be the starter enable relay. Last time it did it to me i was at work. Gave the panel that it hides behind a hard kick and it started right up.

Thanx for the info clean92rs, vcx91 i didn"t know that i had a starter relay on the car. I checked the solenoid and starter but didnt find a relay. If you could let me know where to look for it , i would be greatful. Its not in my haynes manual!

The relay sits behind the driver side kick panel. Mine was behind some black sticky stuff.

that relay is part of the passkey system.i had the problem that if the engine compartment got too hot the starter wouldn't work except by the wire i ran straight from the starter solinold to where i could bump the wire against the battery terminal.i added a ford starter relay and that fixed the problem.

Thanks for the info! I found it and it had the black sticky stuff on it and it was on the contacts to the plug. I cleaned them off real good and i have not had a problem all week with the car cranking since and my alternator needle is working and charging above thirteen since for the first time. Thanks again, you have been a great help!
