Sensor Replacement
Hey guys,
I have a $50 coupon at advance auto and want to spend it on replacing some sensors which I am pretty sure have never been replaced. So far I'm getting:
o2 sensor
knock sensor
air charge temp sensor
air cleaner temp sensor
MAP sensor
coolant temp sensor
should I get a new throttle position sensor? Anything else I should pick up?
Thanks

Re: Sensor Replacement
Do you have any codes telling you something is bad? Do you have bad gas mileage? Do you have poor throttle response? do you have overheating issues? Don't spend $ "just to spend $. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Re: Sensor Replacement
I tore down the engine two years ago, replaced all gaskets, put new springs and seals in the heads and swapped in a LT1 cam. Before that I was having all kinds of problems. After putting the car back together and doing a little prom tuning it runs pretty well when it gets up to normal operating temp. Now that I have a little tuning experience I realize that some of the parts I re-used I should probably replaced since they are all 20+ years old. I'm trying to insure the readings that the PCM is making decisions based off of are as accurate as possible.

Re: Sensor Replacement
just because are old doesnt mean need replaced i would really leave alone unless there really is an issue with any of them
really.
aftermarket new sensors arent gonna be any better quality than the original delco ones
really.
o2 sensor woul dbe good idea to replace sure
but the rest not unless they are faulty
imho theres better things to spend the money on
really
like nicer secondary wires and better stronger coolant/fuel hoses and better ign coil and better ign module, better oil, and such
have fun!!

Re: Sensor Replacement
I understand the idea of "if it ain't broke don't fix it"
However, its not like my car is operating at peak performance. Ideally I would like to electrically test everything that I am replacing to see if they are operating within spec. I will do some searching around to find out how to do this, if anybody knows of some good links please let me know.

Re: Sensor Replacement
I had to replace my MAF earlier this year & the aftermarket one I got from Autozone is newer technology & I believe can flow more CFM, due to (what appears to me) the sensor's less cross-sectional area in the air stream. Besides that.....It is hard to believe that in 20 yrs, the technology to measure the airflow would not have gotten better at more accurate readings.

Re: Sensor Replacement
I replaced cap, rotor, wires and plugs when I rebuilt the engine. Less than a thousand miles since then. And again, I'm definitely not running at 100% so I'm trying to eliminate any weak links. I don't know how many of you guys have done any prom tuning, but if my MAP readings are off by 10% that can directly affect what the PCM is doing to compensate for what it believes are low or high numbers.
