Lost chip from key

Hello, I have a 1990 Camaro IROCZ, somehow the chip fail out of the ignition key. I went to a dealership and they say they don't have the codes going back that far. Does anyone know if there is away to completely bypass the VATS system, without the chip in the key? The chip is lost. Thanks in advance for all ideas and help

There are a couple ways to bypass the vats. you can buy a cats bypass module ebay or painless wiring. you can have the vats reprogramed out of the memcal or buy some resisters and try them until you find the match of the passkey module.

I had to have a new VATS module programed to a new key.I tested the pellet in the new key for resistance ,then filed the results in my Camaro file. I ended up using that resistance in a VATS by pass of my own creation.

Re: Lost chip from key

I need to buy a spare VATS key for my 89 IROC-Z. I've seen them advertised online at about half the price of one from the dealer. I asked the seller how he would determine which resistance pellet was required and he said that he or the dealer could look it up through my VIN number. I know there are about 15 different resistances used so is this accurate? Or can the dealer still check my key and tell me which one I need?

use your ohm meter and find the corresponding number off the chart on this link.

I went to this link after my post. Great information. Thanks! but, I still wonder if it can be traced by the VIN. It just doesn't sound right. I have had new keys made in the past after a steering column swap and lock change but I wasn't aware that I could check the resistance with a muti-meter. Again thanks for the information.

I'm trying to use a multimeter but I can't seem to get a reading. does it get measured from end to end or side to side?
