Cannot get engine to crank
Hi. I have been trying for three days to get this engine to crank over. I have an 83 trans am with a rebuilt 305 engine just put in. I connected all the wiring to the engine in anticipation for start up. Crank the ignition and all i get is the temp gauge jumping from 0 to past 200. I have checked and replaced the fuses, checked all my connections, replaced the fusible links to the starter, and replaced the battery cables. The battery is brand new and charged. I need help. This car is driving me insane. PLEASE someone give me some advice.
Thanks
Matt

have you tried jumping the solenoid with a screwdriver? does it sound like its trying to do anything?

yes i jumped it and the starter kicked in. It seems like its a wiring issue, but i cannot find whats wrong or where to start looking.

Re: Cannot get engine to crank
can you get someone to try and crank it while you check for 12 volts at the S wire on the solenoid? if its an older type solenoid, of course make sure the wire isnt hooked up to the R post. post your findings. might be something else, but just check the basics first.

Re: Cannot get engine to crank
So i was rooting around under the dash and discovered some loose wires. Can anyone help me out by identifying and telling me what they are for. This car needs to start soon, or its gonna drive me crazy

Re: Cannot get engine to crank
Follow power through the starter circuit until you find the fault
Start at Ign switch , check for 12V on yellow wire in START.
Check for 12V at safety switch.

Re: Cannot get engine to crank
Ok i followed all of the instructions and finally got the engine to turn over. I tested all the switches and they all were getting power. So i took a look at the neutral switch, and found that it was not engaging fully when the clutch was depressed. I adjusted the switch and boom. The engine turned right over. Thanks redneckjoe and vetteoz for your help. Now i just have to get the engine started.
