87 z28 smoke coming out of oil plug hole...?

So I got a 1984 z28 carbed engine, its a manual, and I just got an oil change today, when I got home smoke was coming out of the hole where the oil plug goes. IDK if this is normal for a car this age, or if something is up. The engine sounds fine, it doesn't make any funny noises its just the smoke that I am worried about.

Ima upload some piks you u guys can see form where the smoke is coming from .

Re: 87 z28 smoke coming out of oil plug hole...?

what you are referring to is called blowby, Its compression getting into the crrank case. It is the sign of bad compression rings. Unless its really bad, its just a tell tell sign that an overhaul is coming soon.

Overhaul aka rebuilding the engine at the least new seals and gaskets.
Do you got an oil temp gauge?

when I said overhaul, i ment it time for a new set of rings.
But there are other things you can try. Do a compression test on each cyclinder. Once you find the affected cyclinder, You can pour aditives in the park plug hole and let it set. This is only if you have a stuck ring... If your rings are bad then it time to replace... If the car runs great other than you smoking problem. I would drive it till it became a real problem... check you pcv valve make sure it working right. good luck

This is true although, overhaul coming soon is a relative term. I have driven engines with blow by for years, and then sold them with out over hauling, so don't get your hackles up about it. Drive it and enjoy it. How does it run? does it run smooth? Does the engine feel weak? Is it blowing smoke all the time? How is the oil pressure?

Re: 87 z28 smoke coming out of oil plug hole...?

Overall the car runs great, the only thing I goota let the car warm up on cold start for about 10 min or else it will be very jumpy when trying to take off first gear(is that normal?), and sometimes when Im on idle I start to hear a squaky noise(sounds like a loose pulley) and I push the clutch in and the squeaky noise goes away, IDK what it is

I got another question when entering the freeway I drive in 5th gear but when I "floor it" the engine seems to respond the same and increases it speed slowly. IDK if that normal or if something is wrong?thanks!

and where is the PCV valve in my engine, thanks!

Re: 87 z28 smoke coming out of oil plug hole...?

Blow by is really kinda normal, make sure your cap is sealing and pcv system is functioning properly, that's what the pcv system is for. These cars did that when they were new, just a thing that happens with steel rings.

Re: 87 z28 smoke coming out of oil plug hole...?

If smoke comes out of the cap when the cap is on, you have a leaking or loose cap. Tighten or replace it. Otherwise don't worry about it, its normal.

The "squaky noise" is likely the throw out bearing for the clutch. Could be the trans input bearing.

5th gear is OD and is more for cruising and light acceleration. Moderate to heavy acceleration you should gear down for just like in town.

The PCV is on a valve cover. They are not usually expensive and not too hard to replace. Change if it hasnt been done recently. This is good routine maintence.
