Can't Put Car Into Gear First Time

Hey guys I've been a member for a little while now but haven't posted yet so let me introduce myself first. I'm 17 and I have a 1990 Iroc Z with a 350 that I've had for a little over a year that I've been working on and just recently got it into driving condition after getting it repainted.

Now to my problem, since I started driving it about a month ago it would sometimes stall out when I put it into gear, mostly when I put it in reverse and every now and then when I put it in drive. It wasn't such a pressing issue because it didn't happen all the time and there were other problems to take care of first, mainly it just not starting at all. So first we had to bypass the security system then after that the normal stuff like plugs and wires, battery, starter, etc. then most recently new fuel injectors (which weren't freaking cheap) but ever since I had the new fuel injectors put in the car stalls out the first time I put it into gear after I start it almost every single time. If I put it in drive it will stall out then I start again and it'll be fine but reverse takes usually 2 or 3 or sometimes up to 5 times before it will actually back up and I have absolutely no idea why. Could it be a transmission problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated it could be something simple but I'm just not very car smart yet (trying to learn haha)

Also sorry for the long post and try not to be too mad at me if I start making other new threads with possibly dumb questions I've already learned a lot from this site but I still don't know everything yet haha

Re: Can't Put Car Into Gear First Time

quite a few members here that have late model thirds
that are older than they areSO trying to back up,does
the engine stall or engine keeps running and car won't
back up? I'm wondering if the torque converter lock up
is staying locked when it shouldn't be.Does car jerk
strongly when put in gear?

The engine completely stalls out when I put it in reverse and it does jerk pretty good when put in gear

Honestly not sure about the timing I just had a tune up so I would think it was done? I'll have to ask the mechanic to be sure though.

And thanks for the compliment! It took a long time of working 2 jobs to get it where it is now but there's still ALOT of work to be done (don't look at the interior, most of isn't in there)

Lmao, who needs interior, its just extra weight

But definetly get the timing checked, and what # inj did you put in?

Does it seem to get any better/worse the more the engines warmed up?

Re: Can't Put Car Into Gear First Time

The mechanic replaced all of the injectors if thats what you meant by what number and it gets better when warm if I've been driving it then shut it off and start it up again within a short amount of time there's less of a chance of it stalling out but it will still do it sometimes when its warm

Re: Can't Put Car Into Gear First Time

No, i meant what lb. injector, (#) lol im pretty sure that car uses 22lb in injectors. If the wrong size injectors were put in i could see that being your problem. Ask the mechanic what lb injector he installed, and try to see a reciept or something that will show that it is/ isnt the correct injectors.

But first verify correct timing & firing order, make sure ALL 8 cylinders ARE getting spark, and make sure its 22# injectors that were installed. After youve done these things post back and we can go from there.

Re: Can't Put Car Into Gear First Time

Just talked talked to the mechanic he said that when he did the tune up (~1 month ago) he did the timing and its the right injectors. Also I know the firing order is right and all cylinders are getting spark because I figured out I had 2 dead misses before (3 and 5 I think) so that was just fixed and he checked the firing order again to be sure. He said he's going to try to take a look at it sometime this week because he's not too sure just by guessing other than maybe something in the transmission.

Re: Can't Put Car Into Gear First Time

Well i dont know your mechanic, but if it ran ok before he timed it, maybe he timed it wrong. Ask how he timed it, and to what degree before top dead center, or BTDC. Also, ask if he unplugged the connector that goes into the distributor before he timed it.

Also, idk if you or him did anything with the tranny, but if its been overfilled with tranny fluid it can cause it to stall when put into any gear. Basically, it gets hydrolocked and stalls out the engine. Itll run ok in park or neutral tho, because its not in gear. So something else to check.

Im not trying to make your mechanic sound like he doesnt know what he's doing, but like i said i dont know him or know how good he is. Just trying to cover all our bases so we know 100% sure what has been checked and confirmed as being correctly done.

Something you or him should do tho, hook up the O2 sensor to the diagnostics tool, sorry i forget what its called at the moment, but it'll tell you what the state of tune the engines in, ie. running rich/lean or perfect. If its running to lean maybe thats why its stalling out under load. Id be more inclined to believe its a timing error, or tranny fluid overload. Also hook up a vaccum gauge to it to see how much vaccum it has and fix any vac leaks you may have
