no crank full power to starter

replaced IGN switch.. all set.............

my car would not start the other day, full power to the starter but no crank no spin no noise..
checked all wires and found all the little red wires to the starter have exposed spots on them. can i replace just those??? or do i need whole positive battery cable??
the wires are not touching each other or anything else, could they be the cause of my no start??
starter was jumped so starter is good..
thanks guys!!!

So the starter solenoid is not being activated ( getting power)
Check the wiring (usually purple wire) from the Ign switch to the starter solenoid terminal
Should have 12V on it when key in START position
Could be faulty wiring or connection , faulty Ign switch , starter relay, etc

Re: no crank full power to starter

i think my stater solenoid is bad? i checked 12v all the way to starter. the little red wires at starter were exposed. i cut them back till they were clean wire and reconnected them "one at a time" tried to start and still no crank!
i tried to jump soleniod again, this time it spun starter but starter did NOT engage flywheel.
advance auto by me has rebuilt starter with solenoid for $35. getting it tommorow.
ill let you know if it starts "without screwdriver"

FWIW
If you jump the big terminals on starter ; all you do is make the starter spin.
(confirms starter motor actually works )
You need to jump to the small solenoid terminal in order for the solenoid ( if working ) to throw the gear out and engage the flywheel

Re: no crank full power to starter

I pulled starter out and bench tested it. It works fine
I tried checking the NSS purple and yellow wires. NO power to those wires with key in any position..
Where is the starter relay located????

Re: no crank full power to starter

ok so no power at the neutral safety switch. i blew a fuse to my radio, when i looked at the fuse box under dash i noticed the purple and yellow wires coming up behind the kick panel. they were taped off at the harness under dash never connected, but car had been starting just fine till 3 days ago. now i'm really confused..

Re: no crank full power to starter

I believe I fixed it. I replaced the battery cables, new starter and solenoid, still didn't start. I tried jumping purple wire to NSS with the lil blue wire next to it. Car cranked like a champ I pulled of jump wire running fine.. BUT!!
Now service engine light on. Could that be cuz I started without NSS and it's disconnected???

Your problem is you have no power on starter circuit to the NSS.Blue wire obviously supplied power from a different place
Backtrack on the starter circuit and find out why you have no power into the NSS
The fact the purple / yellow wires are taped up might mean someone has already removed the starter relay ( are the wires joined together? )

You don't say but assume you have a auto
Switch unit on shifter has 3 separate switches;
the NSS
the backup lights
and a P/N indicator to the computer
I don't have a wiring diagram for your car
( cause we don't even know what car you have ; fill in your profile on left )
but the blue wire may be that one which could account for the SES light as the computer is connected to something it shouldn't be ?

Re: no crank full power to starter

Its a 86 t/a lg4 305 auto 700r4 with carb.
The p&y wires under dash are in a harness but just the (male) side and covered in tape.
I clearly read other treads wrong, I thought it said if you jump the wires to the NSS and it cranks the NSS is no good

You jumper ( at the NSS ) the 2 NSS wires together to bypass it;
not connect to a completely different circuit ( sure way to blow something up ! )

If however,
you have no power on either wire at the NSS then your initial problem is upstream between the ign switch and NSS

That is power wire for backup lights

Start at the Ign switch itself and see if you have 12V on the big yellow wire ( in start position ) out of the switch.
Switch itself may be faulty

If switch works you could always run a temp wire direct from it to NSS?

Re: no crank full power to starter

Checked for power to the ign switch at the blue harness in top of steering colum, there's a blue harness and a black harness. The blue harness houses the Yellow wire I put test light on yellow wire and turned key, no power. The fat constant red wire next to the yellow has power but Nothing to the yellow with key turned on

Re: no crank full power to starter

Something clicks under dash sounds like its coming from top of steering colum when I turn the key. Everything has power some with key off some with key on but nothing to the yellow
