Help Engine problem slapping/banging sound
Help Engine problem slapping/banging sound
I am looking for some help me to figuring out what this slapping/banging noise coming from my car. It started yesterday on my way home. I pulled up at a gas station by my house and filled up. As I was turning the corner into my neighborhood the engine died for a second. I cranked it and it didn't start, I waited a few seconds and tried again and it cranked up. Thats when I heard the slapping/banging sound and I immediately cut the car off and checked the oil dip stick which was fine. Also while driving the car, the cars temp and oil pressure gauges all stayed level and the car drove fine. I never had an indication something was wrong till it cut off going into the turn and I heard the sound when I cranked it again. As ff now I haven't had a chance to open up and check anything. However my neighbor telling me from the sound he thinks its a bad crankshaft or bearing. I don't know too much about engines so any help would be greatly appreciated. The noise gets louder as the engine is revved and is lower while idling, also there is a time period when the noise stops for a split second

whatever it is doesnt sound good. Did the ac compressor make a noise when you touched it or was that coincidence?
I say take off your serpentine belt and restart the engine. This will rule out all the accessories, and idler pulleys as having a bad bearing.

First thing to do is figure out where it's coming from... top? bottom? front? rear? left? right? middle? louder from above, or from underneath?
Re: Help Engine problem slapping/banging sound
Yea it sound bad and I'd hate to lose or have to rebuild an engine. But that was a coincidence, I just touched that for no reason. The noise gets louder as I rev the engine and I am trying to determine were the sound is coming from it sounds like the bottom corner of the car by the starter (not too sure though). Cause when it cut off I was thinking it's the starter as the car has burned through 2 starters before. On Tuesday my dads friend who is a mechanic says he come by to check it. But before then I would like some ideas on whats going on before I just give up on the engine...

collapsed lifter maybe?? an intake lifter colapsing could cause the engine to die for a sec if that lifter had also been opening an intake valve at the time of its collapse.... just a thought.. btw, lifters are fairly easy to change...

yep, just listened to the vid, DEFINITLY sounds like a collapsed lifter.. some of chevys engines seem to be slightly prone to this..

i would think lifter first or a wrist pin bearing and if that isnt it go into the bottom end for crank bearing.... pull the valve covers and start there.

First check the easy stuff, pull your valve covers and check your rocker arms and pushrods. This will also let you know if a lifter collapsed. My car sounded much the same and it was a threaded rocker stud backing out of the head. Pull the valve covers first, see what you got...
