possible blown motor/trans on a 1991 z28 should i buy it?

I looked at the car and as is i asked in a previous thread, and im not sure what to think about it. there is absolutely no rust an while the clear is peeling no body damage. the interior is complete and nice with a good dash pad. While i tried my best to get it started the starter is bad and a few smacks with a hammer only got it to turn over slowly. he only wants 2000 and it seems suspicious for and L98 car. i need this for a daily and dont want to get screwed so even with a bad motor what would you pay? how much are l98's or could i just do a 305 tpi swap.

2 grand is alot for something with a blown motor. Just my opinion. On something like this, you pay your money and you take your chances...

I only paid $1500.00 for my 92 z28 with an L-98 and it smoked, so I knew I had to rebuild it. All that, it was driveable so I knew the tranny and rear end were good in it. If you can't get this to start so you check out those, you are taking a big chance. I spent about 2k rebuilding my L-98, including having the cylinders re-bored and new pistons, but in the end I got a brand new motor for that. So I'd budget for that expense if you get it. As for the 305, you'd have to switch the computer as well. Personally, I'd offer him 1,200 to 1,500 and walk if he won't come down. Too many unknowns on a car you can't even start up and move.

yea i just cant take the chance, and with the smashed in oil pan ive got a feeling it was raced a bit. he wont go below 1750 and at 2k to rebuild its just not smart.

well, give him a few days to think about it and go back with 15 Benjamins and fan them out in front of him, He'll sell. That is, if you are still interested.

yeah, definitely don't settle for anything less than what you want. You'll hate it and never care for it. There are plenty of 3rd gens out there. The 91 z28 would be great to have, but you gotta stay within your means too. You'll find something, just hang in there.

Re: possible blown motor/trans on a 1991 z28 should i buy it?

i'd say its well worth $2000 for a straight, rust free,
good interior,and complete but non-running 3rd gen
z28 I prefer the early thirds, but if this was close to me
and hardtop i'd be having a look If i ever end up with
a '90-92,one of the first things i am going to swap out
is the ghastly airbag steering wheel for something a
little better looking

I found a nice 91 rs with a freshly rebuilt 360, never started for 2100, minus a trans though but i had one layin around. Has a fiberglass hood good interior, spent 4months looking.
