Water on passenger floorboard
Water on passenger floorboard
Hey all, I have a 92 rs v-6 and recently i have seen alot of water on my passenger floorboard. Especially when it rains, it fills up a good 2 inches. I have new carpet so this is probably not the best thing for it right now. Anyone have any idea why? Ive read up on this a little and im guessing its coming from the heater core. I just dont understand why it only happens when it rains.
Thanks everyone

If it only happens when it rains it's probably not the heater core. Is the 'water' the color of coolant? Does it smell like coolant? If not then it's probably not coolant. Don't drive in the rain??

2" of water - wow that's a lake
Can't see it being coolant for that much, it would be steaming, stinking, and you'd be overheating. And only when it rains?
Try the hose idea anyway, that's how I found where mine was leaking on top of the windscreen. A car wash might not direct water onto the leaking area for long enough.
Might have to keep at it for several minutes for the water to wick through whatever path it has found for itself. Could be door seals, windscreen seal, or coming thru the firewall or cowl area.

If it isn't a t-top then my bet is the car is being parked on down hill slope and water getting by the hatch seal. Or there are firewall drains that could be plugged.

The hill or slope one I can't see as being it either. It does of anywhere. I'm in the car driving in the rain and look down and this puddle/lake is forming down there. It is not door seals or anything like that. I see it slowly filling up as I drive and definitely coming from somewhere near the firewall..

How do you get to the drains? I have a similar problem. My carpet gets wet but my floor mat doesn't. It does smell like water, I'm not lossing coolent or over heating and the heater works great. It's not soaked either it's just damp and iv never figured out what it is. New seals all the way around the car beside the hatch and cowl. And if water gets in the cowl it drains out under the car like it should

Re: Water on passenger floorboard
I think there are drains on the bottom of the evaporator case and also make sure where that screen is by the wipers its not filled with debri. Maybe someone with a bare firewall can post a pic of where water can be entering. I haven't owned a 3rd in sometime but know my vette has drain tubes, so don't see why a 3rd gen wouldn't either.
Re: Water on passenger floorboard
This is not good. If it was coming through a hole in the floor somewhere, I imagine you would have seen it when you put in the new carpet. Also, if it was coming in from below, i.e. splashing up, you would just get a damp spot, not a lake.
I had a similar problem with my first 3rd gen(RIP), but on the drivers side PASSENGER foot well. But the problem was at the firewall since the passenger footwell was the low point and the water pools there. On the passenger side, it is the front well that is the low point.
ANYWAY, my guess is the cowl drain.
Get a flashlight out and take a look. Pull the kick panels on the passenger side and look up to where the floorboards meet the firewall- check higher up too if you can. Pull the carpet back too- you will have to pull it anyway to dry it out properly I would imagine. You should have seen the white and grey mould I had growing under mine! It is lucky I didn't come down with mesothelioma or something...
If you see a hole where the drain has rusted through, it is a nightmare to fix. My car burned to the ground before I could get it fixed, so the problem sort of fixed itself- and the car really dried out too! Until the fire department stepped in...
I would also pull the wipers off and remove the cowl screen and give it a good look from the top too.
If you see a lot of leaves etc, pull them out- and if they are a wet, pulpy mess you may have found your problem!
Finally, get under the car with the flashlight and have a look where the ground effects/fender/chassis meet behind the front wheel. That is where the cowl drain is and if it is clogged with vegetation, the water has no where to go- but rust through to the cab! Good luck!
