Knocking/smacking noise? Not from inside engine tho

When I start my 84 camaro it runs fine but it makes this sound like something is hitting something else. It's not from inside the engine it's a differnt noise than that. It seems to be coming from the starter or flywheel. Any ideals on wat it can b?

I had the engine and tranny out. The flex plate was fine from what I could tell. Not cracks or Anything. I put it all back together and I hear that damn noise

There was a previous thread where a guy had a similar noise, and it turned out to be a loose starter. Check this if you haven't.

Come to think of it I kinda hurried up and threw the starter on. It might very well be that.

also check the plastic cover the covers the torque converter/flexplate. I put that on wrong once and it sounded like you're describing.
