Shifter won't go into park, overdrive, 2 and 1 gear

Car: 1984 Chevy Camaro
Engine: 305
Transmission: 700r4
Axle/Gears: 7.5in 10 bolt with 3.08
Shifter won't go into park, overdrive, 2 and 1 gear
I can get it to go into park if I jerk the shifter forward real hard. And now lately i can't shift into the overdrive gear or 2 and 1.
I took the cable off the transmission and the linkage moves fine. I think it's the shift. But what the hell would cause this so I can fix it?

The cable is separated inside the cover and needs to be replaced. It is frayed inside and is jamming up.
