Re: engine will not turn need help badly

Well my heads had gone a little leaking oil burning a little bit so decided to re ring and get the heads done.
Pulled out the engine and trans together. Parts I bought oil pump, main bearings, connecting rod bearings, piston rings std.,harmonic balancer. Things not done no oversizing the cylinders no new cam or crank all bearings standard. Crank was pulled and placed vertically cam stayed in place. So I put things back together I torque everything to spec. When installed the crank and bearings where bolted down it had some tension didn't spin freely. Piston my piston got a bit harder to turn ( but pistons would move freely within the cylinder) after the last to pistons there was no way in hell I could turn it. Had never rebuilt an engine thought it was normal so dropped it in tried to crank it broke my starter. So today I lifted the engine pulled the support bolts out and lifted it enough to get the oil pan out. I loosen main bearings and checked them no wear. Loosen connecting rod bearings and checked no damage. Tried to turn it with nothing really tight and still super bar easy over 100 pounds of force to turn it maybe half inch. So what can be some other things that might be affecting.

Yes first.
Ok so Idk if this important when I put my timing chain with the two marks meeting each other at the crank. But my tdc was 1 instead of 6 could this have to do with my engine not being able to turn?

Re: engine will not turn need help badly

There are a number of things that come to mind. From the main/rod caps not being put back right,to nothing being measured. Can you just slap rings and bearings in??. Sure. But you have to check those clearances. And yes the cam timing could be off as well.

It's not you bud.I can't see me getting involved in a long thread right now.

I will drop by from time to time and I hope by my replies I planted the seeds for the other guys to post to help you.

Re: engine will not turn need help badly

Ill post a few fairly common screw up areas you can check, and yeah ! I know your 100% sure you did everything correctly, but thats not true or the problem would not exist!

(1) connecting rods have a beveled side that faces the crank counter weight, and a non-beveled side that faces the matched rod in the pair, get one ot both reversed and the crank binds

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...s+bevel#p12703

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...php?f=53&t=852

(2)rings need to be properly gaped, failure to get the ring gap correct will result in the piston locked in the bore or excessive ring to bore wall drag

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...ng+gaps#p12277

(3) bearing clearances must be carefully verified, not assumed to be correct

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...+plastic#p7873

(4) cam to rod and connecting rod to block clearances need to be checked

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...+circle#p16221

(5) valve train clearances and adjustment must be checked

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...php?f=52&t=399

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...d%2C+pump#p325

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...php?f=52&t=181

(6)degreeing the cam in or at least checking the cams index is critical

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...hp?f=52&t=5520

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...hp?f=52&t=5341

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...hp?f=52&t=4957

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...hp?f=52&t=4548

http://forum.grumpysperformance.com/...php?f=52&t=528

(7) if you install a piston with the wrong side facing out toward the spark plug location,or the wrong valve pocket on the piston facing forward it can cause the engine to bind

(8) the wrong length bolt or stud on the oil pump mount can bind the rear main bearing in its bore

(9)check to verify the caps face the correct direction, its entirely possible to install them facing the wrong direction and get that result

theres many more potential screw-ups but check those carefully

Re: engine will not turn need help badly

well? what did you find? what was the cause?
we ALL learn at times from either making mistakes or watching others make mistakes, its just part of the learning process, the key is learning from and not repeating those mistakes.
I really wish I was local so I could help some of the less experienced guys!
