Dropping Engine and Tranny?
I'm pulling the engine and tranny out of my 86 z28, and everything at the moment is disconnected and unbolted except the distributor and whatever wiring in behind it. I heard the easiest way to get them out if dropping it down out of the car on a lift. How would I do this though? tranny hoists and screw jacks is the only thing I can think of. Or would it just be easier to pull it all out the top with a crane?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Dropping Engine and Tranny?
It is MUCH more difficult to do the FWD thing in these cars, than the traditional way.
Pull it out the top.
I'd suggest leaving the trans in place and dealing with it separately. Others may suggest otherwise; but I generally find it's ALOT easier not to have some big long heavy unbalanced swinging dripping thing hanging off the back of the motor while wrestling with it.

Ditto. It would be in my opinion easiest to pull from top without trans connected.
Just need a long enough arm hoist, as mine will hit front bumper before getting all way back to motor, so i go from the side with hood off the car and wheel off the car

This is how I do it. Car on my lift, hoist on side with hood on. (I have done a buttload of them this way, 500 plus)
Re: Dropping Engine and Tranny?
Im not sure you could drop it thru the bottom, could you?? Thats the way for allot of the newer cars. Use a picker, like they have all said. I go from the front. I have pulled both ways, with and without the tranny. W/O the tranny is the way to go on these cars. Its not that hard to unbolt it, and just take your plenum, runners, and distributor off, and you can easily get the top tranny bolts....and the grounds on the heads much easier/.
