Having a hard time idling during break in

Hey guys, hopefully somebody can straighten me out with this. I just put together my 383 stroker with lunati cam (60103) flat top pistons and edelbrock aluminum heads and intake. I'm running a Holley 750, no choke, vac secondaries. It came off a buddies 355 and was running ok. So I'm trying to break in my new motor and we can't get the damn thing to idle. Started at 10 degrees timing, tried it all the way up to 30 degrees (pings), won't idle. Tried dialing out the idle mix screw 3 whole turns, doesn't like that. Also, we're not getting any vacuum. Any ideas guys? thanks, Ian

flat tappet cam, do not idle during breakl in, get it up to 2.5K rpms and vary up to 3 and down to 1500/2000 and keep doing that for at least 15 minutes or you will kill the lobes

Re: Having a hard time idling during break in

Thanks, I should've mentioned that I am aware of the break in procedure. I thought you had to set it to at least idle nice first and then rev up to 2000, but with that in mind I'll just start it and keep it at 2000 for 15 minutes. i'll update after tonight. thanks guys.

Re: Having a hard time idling during break in

no get it up to rpms immediately, at idle there is little splash lubing the cam and it will wipe out

Re: Having a hard time idling during break in

ok great, i will do that tonight when I get home from work. I was watching the oil pressure gauge and it seems to have loads of oil pressure. I have a brand new melling oil pump in there, so it seems to be working properly. Let's hope I don't break it!

Re: Having a hard time idling during break in

yes but oil pressure is insufficient to lube a flat tappet cam, you need splash oiling

Re: Having a hard time idling during break in

Noted, I will start it up when I get home from work and immediately rev up to 2500 for 15 minutes, varying up to 3000, and down to 1500.
