Shift cable??

I'm not sure what exactly I need to be looking for, so I figured I'd post and see if anyone could help me.

I have an 82 camaro, with a B&M Megashifter, the T handle ratchet style, and I'm needing a cable from that, down to my th350 lockup transmission.

I'm not really sure what I need to be shopping around for, cable/length wise

Did you buy this new or used? Is it the 80692 console model for our cars?

The one that comes with the 80692 is really long and has to be looped around the top of the tranny. Makes it shift hard - at least, mine is a lot harder to shift than the Megashifter in my '57 (granted, I have a truck model in the '57, which has a longer handle, but it seems to be more than that). The stock cable is 2' long, I don't know why a 2' cable wouldn't work. I actually bought a 2' cable a couple of years ago, but just haven't gotten out there to try and install it.

Re: Shift cable??

It was in the car when I bought it, so I'm not sure about the numbers on it, I could get a picture of it, if that would help. The transmission is out of a truck, not sure if that'll make a difference or not, I know it was "set up" for a column shift

The console vs. non-console vs. truck has to do with the height of the shifter, not anything to do with the transmission. Anything but the console version would stick up noticeably high.

Go to bmracing.com. If you click on the "automatic shifters" link, that'll take you to a page that has some links in the left margin, one if which is "automatic shifter replacement parts". You'll need the cable bracket and transmission shifter shaft arm for the TH350 (assuming you don't have those parts, since you don't appear to have the cable).

Re: Shift cable??

I believe I have this piece: http://www.jegs.com/i/B-M/130/30498/...oductId=751254

Am I going to need this: http://www.jegs.com/i/B-M/130/20462/...oductId=751254

The transmission has a shift lever like this on it: http://www.chevyasylum.com/tech/68nova_198w.jpg

If that's the bracket you have (it comes with the shifter when new), then that's the piece you need.

And, yes, you need that lever if you don't have it.

Any idea what became of the shifter cable?

(BTW, in researching a response for this thread, I realized I couldn't use the bracket I currently have on my TH400 for the 4L80E that's going in to replace it in the '57. So, you did me a service for my own project...)

Re: Shift cable??

Glad to help, i think? lol

As for the shifter cable.... unless it is under the car still bolted on somewhere, it is gone. When I bought the car, I saw the shifter, and when loading it on the trailer, I believe the bracket (the piece I have) fell out and I picked it up, it had a piece of metal wire on it, maybe it was what they "used" as the shift cable, I'm not really sure I'll get a picture of it tomorrow or later today and see if you can help me identify it.

Shouldn't be hard to find. The cable cover is red, the cable is long and there's really nowhere to stuff it other than above the tranny.

Re: Shift cable??

I found the piece of wire I was talking about, and it had both of these attached to it:

and this one

You can see the piece of metal wire running out (I assume it's what was left of the shift cable)

So I should be good on those pieces, right?
