why wont this flywheel fit?!

Okay let's go back to my starting point, October of last year I pulled my v6 out if my car so I could install a 96 350 vortec I had rebuilt. Well I quickly figured out the original flexplate wouldn't fit, original trans was a 4l80e transmission. Well I picked up a new flex plate for my car for a 153 tooth flex plate and changed the starter and its been working.... kinda. Iv had an issue with my flex plate getting hurt and my starter going out every few months
Well now to my current Dillima, I was told that I'm running the spring flexplate and starter and that I needed a set up for the 96 truck but with a 4l60e instead of the 80, but from what I'm researched, the 60 and 80s share the same flexplate in size at least. So how can I make a 168 tooth flex plate fit in my car with a 700r4

Any one of these flex plates work.

Plenty of 700r4/4l60's running 168 tooth wheels. Buy a starter for the 168 tooth wheel and install. Original starter for the L31 engine should be a mini starter and will work. Be sure to get the bolts.

Have you checked tooth contact on your current setup? noisy?

Re: why wont this flywheel fit?!

Thing is that I work at zone and currently have my flywheel and starter warranted there so I'm looking for a swap that I can get from there. The reason I'm wanting to change is because when I did my swap I couldn't install the original 4l80e flex plate because it wouldn't fit in the bell housing of my 700r4, well I went down to a 153 tooth flywheel and the vortecs original mini starter wouldn't reach the flywheel so I had to change it out for the fat 153 tooth starter, now my issue is that every few months my starter will start to grind BAD until I install shims then it goes away, its currently doing this for the second time. My buddy told me that if got the wrong starter and flywheel installed and I need the original stuff back but a flex plate for a 4l60e. Help.

If you still have the starter from the original trans it will work. Any 168 flexplate from a one piece rear seal small block engine will work from 1986 up to the advent of the LS engines(about 2000). If you need a specific year go with a 96-99 vortec 350. Buddy was right about the flywheel. Pickups had a 168 tooth flywheel(at least the ones I have seen) and a 700R4/4L60/E transmissions 1/2 ton.

The diameter (size) means little.
It is the convertor bolt pattern on the flexplate that determines what the flexplate is intended for.
The T700/4L60E convertor has a 10.75" bolt pattern ; 4L80E convertor has 11.50" pattern

GM made a 168 tooth 11.50" flexplate #12554824 and a 168 dual 10.75" / 11.50" pattern flexplate #14088761

The FRA-159 mentioned above is listed as having both convertor patterns

actually now that you say that I remember my torque converter being too small for the original flex plate and I couldn't get the bolt holes to align for me to ever get one bolt through. So the 4l60e has the same torque converter as the 700?

Re: why wont this flywheel fit?!

Just get a 153 tooth flywheel for a 87-92 camaro and a93 camaro lt1 mini starter.

Make sure you check it to see if it needs shimmed.

Stock converter?
Dual pattern flex plate or dual pattern converter will work, but for siimplicitly
IMO, do as Johnny Blaze says
Check clearance per manufacturers instructions
