305 CI out and 350 in

Hey Guys,
So it has been a long time but i finally got my car back.
I had a 305 Ci engine in it with the original Q-jet E-carb and it had all kinds of problems.
My parents had the car in a garage while in college and i came home one time to take it for a cruse and bent a rod...
So i always wanted a new engine because i hated the 305 so my dad had a shop in san antonio put a new motor in it.
I told my dad i wanted a 383 stroker motor and would help pay for it.
So about a month later without telling me my dad says my car has a new motor...
Well it ran and i was happy and didn't ask questions. Then i graduated college and started to make money.
Now i really want to make this car fast so i called the shop that built the motor and the owner tells me that my car now has a 4 bolt 350 out of a 76 nova that was rebuilt.
I do not know what class that motor falls under LS, LT,LG4, ??
I also now have no clue what to type in when ordering parts online...
So. My car is now in the garage and has had the Q-jet E carb replaced with a standard Q-jet carb. I have tried to go all natural and get rid of all the electronic crap.
My first addon is headers and i wanted to know what i should buy. If your search for 1986 camaro headers there are sets for like 200 bucks shipped for the 305 which i know would fit on the 350 i just don;t know if it would be better to buy a set for the 350?
My next addon is a cam and underdrive pulley after that and i wanted recommendations. I do not want the car to lope so hard it stumbles at idle but a steady up and down wouldn't be bad.
The final thing i want to know is if it is possible to bore and stroke this 4 bolt 350 out to be a stroker motor in the future and possible put some real power in there with a s-charger or turbos?

That is NOT an LS1 or LS/LT anything. This is gen 1 small block chevy engine. You shouldn't be buying parts to modify your car/engine if you know nothing about it, but if you do want to buy parts just type in what part you need and get the '86-earlier sbc (small block chevy) version of this item.

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

Let me rephrase that. I know it is a first gen small block 350. What i do not know is if headers for a 1st gen SB will fit in the camaro because it is not an engine that came standard on that car. I don't know a whole lot about these cars i just turn wrenches very well.
I was a custom interior and stereo installer for 10 years and am getting back into the car hobby. I want to learn to build this car right but it doesn't happen overnight, so chill.
Can i buy headers for the SB chevy and expect them to clear? I know they will not match up to factory Y or any of that crap.
I meant if i order headers for the LS or LT 350 will they fit and be designed to fit in the engine bay and work on the 1st gen motor?
Or is it even a question and the SB chevy headers will clear by miles?
Thanks

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

As far a external bolt ons it should all interchange. Only differences will be intake manifold, possibly a roller setup on the 305, and that's about it.

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

Ok so the stock intake manifold from my 305 is on it right now...
I want to buy headers. Now do I really need to worry about the o2 sensor on the driver side manifold now that all the ecarb crap is gone?
Also can I rip out that AIR system when I get headers and if so what do I do to all the vacuum lines that go all over?
I want the car to have serious power even if it means putting alot of money into it. Is the 1st gen 350 a good enough motor to build or should I swap it for like an lsx or ls1 conversion?

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

Headers: They sell them specific to the car, not engine. Buy 82-92 camaro headers.

O2 sensor: If its not a computer controlled carb, you dont need that sensor.

AIR: If you need to pass emissions, do not remove it.

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

NagleMac- Its a 305 with the e carb originally so that would be LG4. That is referring to the 305 tho.
I do not have emmissions to worry about and as a matter of fact i already have no cat. If i get these headers i will eliminate the o2 sensor and all the AIR lines that run under the manifold? Is that ok?
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...t/model/camaro
My next question is where i need to run my vacuum lines after there is no AIR box to deal with?
Also it would appear that whomever did the motor swap tagged a line from the temperature sensor wire on the passenger side up to a sensor on the intake manifold, not really sure why. The fan comes on really early now i think possible because of that.

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

sorry about the profile saying LS1 as well. I had a corvette donor car at the time i set up this profile. I set up the profile and then after finding out my donor engine was in worse shape that i thought i got rid of it and never changed the profile. My bad

Yes those headers will eliminate the O2 and Air. Im not entirely sure but i believe that vaccum ports with just need to be capped, so you wont have to re-route the lines anywhere. Also both of those sensors check for coolant temp. One is what shows up on the gauge and the other send the temp to the computer (I dont remember specifically which one is which).

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

so the vacuum lines that go to the carb can be capped off and ignored?
That makes life easy. So i am going to get headers soon and then work my way down the list

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

Just keep in mind that you'll probably run into some fitment issues with those headers. You'd be better off buying ones secific to camaros.

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

If u look at the link to the headers in my post the headers are made for a 1986 Chevy Camaro with a first gen 350. They should fit perfect shouldn't they? I mean obviously the air and o2 and all the extra crap will not fit and most likely the y will have to get redone but everything else should fit, correct?
What do u think? Pretty good first step to adding performance?

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

To keep the AIR or O2, you need a different set of headers, neither of those can be used with these.

Re: 305 CI out and 350 in

Agreed.
But i already said i was getting rid of both the AIR system, because i don't care about emissions, and the O2 sensor because i no longer have an e-carb and thus it does nothing.
So that being said i should be good to go right?
