Help with Valve Seals on a 1989 Iroc TPI
Help with Valve Seals on a 1989 Iroc TPI
Hey guys, I have a 1989 TPI 305 iroc that i decided to put some valve seals in. That year has a service bulletein per GM That has an updated kit. The seals i removed were the rubber type with a band around them in the first picture. The kit i received from gm were metal ones with rubber top for the intake (pic 2)which had to be pressed on to go in place and white plastic ones for the exhaust that just slid down on the head. It also came with all the o rings. Im just not sure if this is right and after a few hours of searching on here i cant find a postive answer. Thanks ahead of time

I've never used the metal ones. When I changed the ones on my 3800 series daily driver they were like the first ones with the metal band. They were included in my Fel-Pro Kit.
The ones on the exhaust do they at least fit good around the valve stems?
Another thing you could would be go to the local parts store and pick up some Fel-Pro ones and see if they fit tight. The $10 or whatever for them would be well worth it instead of having to tear it back down again.

yeah the exhaust ones were really snug around the valve but they just basically sit on the head where as the intake ones pushed down fairly easily then had to be pressed on to the head. if that makes sense

The metal ones are a more modern style. I installed those on my LS3 heads when I replaced the valve springs. Either style should work just fine as long as they're installed properly. I like the metal ones because it's easier to tell when they're fully seated.

I've never used the white plastic ones before, but I would assume they should install the same as the intake side. Are they fitting too loose or something?
Re: Help with Valve Seals on a 1989 Iroc TPI
Not loose. when I took off the spring no seal was under it just that metal spacer for the spring.

Those opaque, white seals just fit over the valve stems and inside the springs under the retainers. They're really not "positive" seals which install onto the valve guide. They just keep oil from splashing onto the valve stems.
Most people call them, "umbrella" seals.

Re: Help with Valve Seals on a 1989 Iroc TPI
- Position the mylar tube on the valve stem.
- Install the umbrella onto the valve stem.
- Remove the mylar tube.
- Position the spring shim (if there is one) on the head.
- Position the spring, cap and retainer.
- Compress the spring.
- Install the o-ring on the valve stem while the spring is compressed. Don't let the retainer slide past the o-ring once it's installed. It'll get damaged.
- Position the keepers and release the spring.

How far do I slide the white umbrella onto the stem? Like this pic here that's the only way it will fit. Is it the rite way? Thanks
