305 major problem
alright so lets start off with it ran great when we first put it in the car. we took if for a drive and the motor didnt have a problem at all. before i took it for a drive and i put the car in time i forgot to take the vacuum advance lines off. i set the car at 8* but when my dad and i looked at total timing it was only at 9*. another problem we saw we were having was a holley 650 vacuum secondaries were leaking. we closed the secondaries and the car still wants to pop and it sounds cammed. the engine is a stock 77 camaro 305 with an edelbrock intake. i also noticed when i pulled the plugs it was running rich. within this time i had my valves adjusted. would them being adjusted hurt anything with the timing being that far off? and how to i make the car stop popping thru the carb? the carb im using sat for a good while before it was ever used until now (5+ years)

Adjusting the valves won't hurt anything. Ignition timing and valve timing are different. Your biggest problem is removing the old motor and putting a 305 in it

it was a v6 and i got that motor for cheap so thats why i went with it. if i had money for the machine work i would have my 355 bottom end finished. how do i fix the popping and it sounding like its cammed? i went thru 50 in gas in 2 days and i only drive 12 miles to work. it smokes like crazy. i just want my car to run right

Re: 305 major problem
Total timing of 9 degrees will make it suck gas and have no power; find out why there's no advance. Also that Holley's probably gonna want a gasket kit and cleanup.

Thanks ill start there. Would that cause it to sound cammed? It's basically a stock engine with an intake. I'm starting to file plugs

Re: 305 major problem
Also does anyone know the actual number I should put the car in total time? I don't have my manual and all I can find is 36-40 degrees. To me that's a huge difference. I just want to make sure I have it right

Re: 305 major problem
There is no set timing. Its different for every car. That is also too big or a carb for a 305, thats where youre running rich problems are coming from.

What exact model Holley are you running? The number is located on the top left of carb with air cleaner off.
