327 engine idles too high
327 engine idles too high
I have a 1989 Camaro with a 327 engine and Holley 600 carb. All of this is relatively new (engine/carb have less than 3k miles). Idling, the car is around 3500-4500 RPM which is ridiculous. In gear it drops to 2500-3000. I have checked all the vacuum lines and intake seals and they all appear to be fine. The carburetor is virtually unresponsive to any tuning. Help and ideas are greatly appreciated.

I take it you have already checked the, timing advance, carb linkage for clearance, idle set screw for proper and contact point etc..
Have you checked to see if the choke is functional ? Sounds like something in the Holley is binding up in the baseplate maybe.

After double checking, there is is no contact between the idle set screw and the arm it should sit on. When I push that arm to be closer to the screw, the idle does lower, but working alone I cannot say how much.

Sounds to me like something is binding up not letting your throttle close all the way to let it idle. Your choke flap should be open.

I still don't understand Y people do this stuff.
Your going to have to learn all the "old school" things to make this work right.
Take the carb off and find out what the heck is binding things up .

Hey, just to let y'all know I figured it out: my spring wasnt strong enough to pull the throttle back so I cut it and it works great. I actually had to up the idle a bit. And then the guy who put the plugs in put wires six and eight in each others spots.
