random misfire and cylinder 1 and 4 misfire codes.

I have replaced both rotor, cap and wires and the plugs roughly 2,500 miles ago. I might possibly have an intake leak could that cause a misfire? when he ran it there was three codes for a random misfire, cylinder 1 and 4 misfire codes. Im stumped on this one and I am out of ideas. Could it be my timing? or Ignition module?

Re: random misfire and cylinder 1 and 4 misfire codes.

What I'm trying to say is that Ur computer can not pinpoint what cylinder is misfiring. Your info says 84 6 banger. Computers weren't advanced enough back then to give a fairly accurate misfire code. They were generic. I've noticed u have made a few threads today about Ur issue. Now, down to diagnostics. Why do u feel 1&4 are misfiring? Is it carbed, tbi , or mpfi? Have u kept up on maintenance? One of your other threads says u just did a tune up with no wires? Why? Seems strange to go after intake gaskets for a misfire without hearing why.

Its carbed, and I put new wires in yesterday and it is still misfiring but its only a slight misfire. I think my timing is off, but im nit sure how to reset the timing.

Re: random misfire and cylinder 1 and 4 misfire codes.

check that first. that can cause a minor misfire. hows the carb looking? cruddy or nice a clean with no leaks? have u sprayed carb cleaner around the intake area? check for vacuum leaks. what u may have is a lean misfire.

im not sure on the v6 timing. i never had to adjust one. it may be in the tech articles.

Re: random misfire and cylinder 1 and 4 misfire codes.

The carb is not leaking, and I have been spraying carb cleaner to clean it out and around to find a leak, so far I have only found one but alot of my vacuum lines look like they need replacing so I am going to go through and fix alot of the vacuum lines, the strange thing is that I drove it all day perfectly fine and then let it sit for an hour and then it started misfiring out of nowhere which leads me to assume that it isnt timing and that a vacuum line busted thus creating a misfire out of nowhere.

The DTCs you're talking about would be P0300"random/multiple misfire", P0301"misfire cyl 1", and P0304"misfire cyl 4". As stated, these codes only apply to 1995 and later vehicles with OBDII compliant engine management. I really wish that boneheads at auto parts stores would just stop scanning peoples cars and misleading them.

Are you sure of which cylinders are misfiring? A power balance test will point them out. Pinpointing which cylinders are misfiring is the generally the first step in determining what's causing the problem. Plug wire routing is critical on these cars. Be sure that no wires have been damaged from contact with the exhaust manifolds.

I once had a handheld scanner. Then I bought my MODIS. Lol. Fix the lines op and see if that helps.

I put all new wires, rotar and cap. But today I looked under my vehicle and seen there was a plug wire hanging down but when I checked the engine all of the plugs were still in so I will prop it up here soon and see where that wire is hanging from

My 97 JeeP zj for the past year has been throwing those same misfire codes. Dunno whats the cause of it. When the engine light comes on i detect no change in the engine associated with those codes like dieseling/pinging/etc etc. I know my plenum (intake manifold) is leaking due to oil consumption and oil in there under the throttle body. Perhaps that is the cause of the codes, i dunno .
