Dies when I put it in gear
put a new overhauled 350 in my 89 camaro. ran great the first 10 miles, it started acting as if i was tething the throttle but accelerates fine, dies when I come to a stop or put it in gear. put in high octane gas and a can of sea foam, changed fuel filter and problem still exist.

hey man just had this issue and just did the same swap I have been doing reading check out your torque converter clutch solenoid it may be stuck locked and causing your car to stall

Re: Dies when I put it in gear
right on, I had thought possibly the TPS but I checked the volts there and it appears to be ok. I looked in my book and tried to find information regarding the clutch solenoid but not having much luck, can you lead me in the right direction.
Re: Dies when I put it in gear
.the solenoid its self is in your transmission pan. im guessing you have a 700r4 but their is the 4 prong connector on the driver side of the trans and if you un hook it and start your car and put it in gear it should stay running and that should tell you its in that circuit

I unplugged solenoid and same results. it seems as if I don't have enough rpms, I dunno. sometimes it will allow me to put it in gear but as soon as i touch the gas peddle it will hesitate and die. at idle it fluctuates but is responsive if I give it gas but when I let off the rpms will drop real low and bounce back up.

Re: Dies when I put it in gear
A stuck open egr will cause a rough low idle. You have not mentioned what the base timing is. if the timing is to retarted the engine will have a low idle. First steps if you have not already done them set the base timing with the est disconnected and the engine warmed up. Set the minimum idle speed and tps if adjustable. There is a park neutral switch to compensate for the transmission load when going from park or neutral into gear.

I have checked the timing several times and it is 0 as it seems to me to be a timimg issue. As far as the tps being adjustable, that I don't know. I am not sure how to determine if is. I will have to look into the park/neutral switch as well. where might I locate these things?

Re: Dies when I put it in gear
Stating what your actually dealing with engine wise will be helpful. obviously you have a fuel injected engine Tbi the timing would be at tdc with the est disconnected, Tpi the timing is advanced to 6 dbtdc. What engine rpm in park ? the park neutral switch is attached to the shifter assemble in the center console. Is the engine rpm stable in park but just low ?

I overhauled a 350 bored 40 over, installed a performance cam (forget numbers, will have to get back with ya if this is critical) with tbi. I found tdc with the esc connected but timed with the esc disconnected and put it on 0. RPM's are at 800 idle but not exactly stable.

The duration is up there for tbi, but you should have decent manifold vacuum 10-12 would think. can you hook up a scanner to look at iac count and target in gear rpm ?

Re: Dies when I put it in gear
your iac steps at warm idle will be 15-30, You do not state if you had someone or you reprogramed the prom and are just compensating using a afpr. Is this stall during park to drive ? Or after you are in drive for a while at a stop light ?
You can always add a few degrees of timing to see how it acts but do it with the est disconnected so the ecm is not trying to compensate. If you get knock retard under heavy acceleration back it off but if its the stock l03 prom you can add 2-4 advance.

I have not had any programming done to the car as that is all as it was from the factory. I eliminated the egr theory as it is working properly. in park the car starts right up and i gas it just a bit and it will hold a idle, not steady but close. Once I put it in gear you can watch the rpm's drop and car dies. Uncertain but I was just out messing with the egr and had the air filter off and it almost seems to idle better with it off which makes me wonder if its lacking air so tomorrow I will still the open top air filter deal off my buddy's camaro and see how it runs with it. other question that came to my mind was the plug behind the TPS sensor which is a 4 pin connector (is this the iac sensor) I unplugged it and nothing happen and don't know if anything would have. as far as timing goes I have run it from 0 all the way to the max on the timing marks and no change in attitude.
