Turns over but wont start

Ok heres the deal... Im working on my sister inlaws 89 305 TBI. At low speeds and low idle it would occasionally just cut off and die. Its happened 3 times and both times its finally started after a 24 period. The 3rd time it didnt. Ive searched over the sight for 2 days and it seems everything Ive read points to loose wires or fuel related. She lives 60 miles away so its not easy just to run over and try things. So far Ive change the fuel filter and tested the fuel pressure. The fuel pressure was low so we put in a new fuel pump. Tried to start it and no change besides good fuel pressure now. We did bypass the VATS in the past but I really wouldnt think thats the problem. Any ideas on what to check would be greatly appreciated. Im trying to make a good list of what it could be so that I can resolve the problem with only 1 road trip. Its really a pain searching "wont start" lol. Just my luck though. Its not a common easy fix... or at least its not from all the searching I been doing.

Re: Turns over but wont start

Just heard from them that its not showing any signs of spark. Could this be something to do with the oil pressure sending unit????? what could cause it to suddenly not get spark while running and then start up again later???? It still wont start though now from what she says....hope we get some ideas before going all the way over there

hey man just an idea, could be the ignition control module which is located under the distributor cap. recently had to change mine, car would turn over but no fire. changed the module and good to go.....

Thanks guys. That re enforces my thought about the ICM. Thanks vetteoz for that link. Its proving very useful. I have Mrs Crasher out there running the tests. Wish I had my camera. Its a beautiful sight! I'll post back when done. Thanks again.

Re: Turns over but wont start

Ok, as my life always is SNAFU. Mama did all the tests, everything looked good. We went up to step 7 on that link posted by vetteoz. Only thing is.... we used a multimeter instead of a test light to test the ignition coil switching signal. On test 5 we got a good 12 volts. On test 6 we got 9 to 11. You think thats the ICM? The wife said the connections were good so I imagine the readings were accurate. Just in case I took the ignition coil off my 92 and put it in... still nothing. So now were trying to get them to scrape up the money to get a 30 dollar ICM? Do yall agree? Can I get an amen!!!!! lol

Re: Turns over but wont start

Problem solved. It was the Ignition Control Module. Thanks Haro and Vetteoz. I had that on my list originally but who knows if Id have started with that. Hopefully someone some day sees this and it helps them. That slightly low voltage made the difference in spark and no spark! thanks again
