well ive looked through posts and havent found anything like my situation. yesterday i went out to continue restoring my 1992 firebird 3.1 and well i have it up on blocks etc.
i started it up and let it run since it had been sitting for 2 years from the previouse owner (have owned it for 3 weeks btw). it had started and ran fine the past week till yesterday.
it ran for about 10 minutes and then stalled out. now when i try to start it it turns over and over and kicks etc as if shes trying to start as if it ignites a lil but no fire anyone have any idea what it may be? and how to solve it.
also when she did run it got this rich fumey smell in the cabin if the windows were up like gas i dontk now what it is . any help is apreciated thank you.

 

Have you pulled a plug to verify it's firing? Do you have fuel pressure? Fuel + Fire = Starts usually lol.

But from the sounds of it you get spark and fuel but the spark is weak, sounds like a Coil to me.

 

also when i force her to crank to much i can get this faint smell of like burning wires and i can hear a clicking noise as it turns over what is that?

 

Burning smell can be the starter wires, the starter draws a lot of power and isn't ment to be on a long period of time those wires heat up. The clicking not sure unless I could hear it.

 

my first guess is the distributor because it seems to come from that area behind the back of the engine

 

Is the cap seated properly?

Check your spark plug wires at the distributor and any that may be broken. Burning smell may be the wires and if have a break the clicking may be arcing when you try to start it up. Just a guess based on what you've said. Good luck.

 

i want to say i took the fuel lines loose the other day and had my grandfather turn the key and they did pump gas we are getting fuel which is wierd since its not starting

Looks like you've got fuel and spark just not enough of one or the other more then likely fuel

 

what do i do because theres fuel coming into the intake hose and the return hose so theres no blockage i mean when it ran it ran smooth then just smothly and quickly shut off could it be fuel pressure

 

Shut off when you turned it off? Could be but before you go tossing stuff at it it could be as simple as the distributor timing slightly off

 

how do i adjust that

 

I'd ask someone that knows how to do that to teach you but look it up on you tube it's as easy as turning a bolt then twisting the distributor one way or the other a small amount till it runs the best.

Clockwise = Retarding the timing
Counter Clockwise = Advancing the timing

Once you get it running you want to have it as far advanced as possible without pinging, once it pings retard it until the ping goes away under load.

Hopefully that will get you running if not then it's fuel or spark.

i also want to say it is up on blocks i was running the engine to get some new fuel into the sytem and som stabil and the check engine light is on ever since it stalled

 

and now i think i brok the cables in the key cylinder and now the vats system is engaged

 

There is how to bypass VATS it's as easy as buying a couple cheap resistors from Radioshack disconnecting a wire and hooking them to those wires.

 

yea and it needs a ohm meeter and stuff and i dont have my hands on one of them

 

well i found out the starter went bad so its not the vats so im gona get that replaced and i still need help figuring out why she suddenly stalled and then wont start

 

hello, I am in desperate need of advice.
recently bought my first Camaro, a 1992 Z28, 5.0TPI. totally got burned on the deal, lots of small problems. the biggest one however is that she keeps stalling (much like mikey8494's Firebird). Plugs and wires have been replaced, distributor is firing. just replaced fuel filter, and I can hear the fuel pump running WHEN she starts. turns over fine, just wont actually fire. if I sit there for a while and open the throttle up while cranking, she'll start to sputter and spit, acting like she wants to fire. then, after having it FLOORED right as I crank, she roars to life. if I don't have my foot at least partially on the pedal however, she dies again. stayed running ONCE, but as soon as I shift in to drive, stalls. please help?

 

Check for a vacuum leak, but I think it's more then 1 issue

 

mines like that but wont even completely fire just turns over and over and over and over and you can hear this clicking noise from under the hood a electric click every time the engine turns over and it did this right after i put it on blocks

 

I had 2 different cars do this.heres a short piece of rubber hose that conects the fuel pump to the sending unit.Over te years the rubber gts old and splits.That can cause a low fuel pressure or none at all.If it's not conected good wen replaced same thing.The repair manuel tlls you how to test fuel flow and injector readings.Old fuel can mess up everything.May have to put new injectors in that firebird.Drain the tank,clean it,blow out the lines,change the fuel filter and hope that works.Droping the tank will be nessasary to get it cleaned out right.If she sat for 2 years you need to do it anyhow.otherwise,when you get it on the road she will clog up and strand you.wont be the cars fault.No easy fix.

 

i tested its got good fuel flow etc and it seems the spark i was getting whas just 12 volts the coil is bad and the front break hoses are colapsed
