Timing chain confusion! Need help!

Hey guys i have a 91 z28 just took out all the TPI set up and swapping to carb. New heads and new cam are going into the build. So my problem is i have bought a cloyes double roller timing chain set but i am seeing that when im trying to install it, the cam sproket hits the plate for the cam. Do i have the wrong timing chain? Does the plate for the cam really have to be there? What do you all recommend thanks!

Did you buy a timing set for a OEM roller cam engine?
Part # ?
The cam gear is different to that used for a non roller camshaft

It stops the cam walking out the front of your engine

For a roller cam use cloyes Timing set p/n 9-1145

"Will not fit factory roller cam applications".

You have to read the fine print when buying because even though a set may be listed for '87+ ,that time frame also included production non roller versions like crate and truck engines

Re: Timing chain confusion! Need help!

A roller cam will walk without it, roller cams didnt begin to come in production engines sbc until 87. If you want to you can use a cam button to set up end play with a non roller block timing chain set but why !
