Repairing Headlight Motor. Replacing plastic bushings. Broken Bolts?

Hi,

My car is an 88 TransAm. I've been looking around on the net, and found some neat youtube info on how to replace the crumbled delrin bushings inside the headlight motor.

I notice guys here on Thirdgen.org don't seem to have much of a problem with the whole procedure. But the other guys , in the youtube videos, end up breaking the bolts off when they try to remove the cylindrical cover to the brushes inside the motor. (The last 2 bolts that need to be removed, which are 1/4 inch head, I believe.)

Anyone have this problem? How did you resolve it? Drill out the bolts?
I REALLY don't want to have to drill out the bolts. Looks very awkward.

Thanks

P.S. I haven't started this project yet.

the passenger's side is easy..

the driver's side the bolt heads WILL snap off. I suppose you can try soaking them with PB blaster, let them sit overnight.

at the end of the day they are small bolt and will snap, if they do you drill them out.

if you buy the rebuild kit from Top Down Solutions it comes with all the parts to rebuild both headlight actuators.

It took me about 2 hours to do the whole project including drilling out the 2 broken bolts.

FRMULA88,

Thanks for replying ! When you say the passenger side is easy, do you mean that you don't have to remove the 2 bolts we're talking about when doing the passenger side?

Correct,

On the passenger side you will not have to take apart the motor to dis-assemble the actuator, so the bolts holding the motor assembly together won't break.

On my car the passenger side wore out, but I went ahead and rebuilt both just on principle so they are both "new"
