engine rebuild

Rebuilding my sbc motor this weekend. Got everything machined and ready to be assembled but looking for torque specs. Im finding mixed info. What are the torque spec for rods and mains? I think its 45 for rods and 70 for mains. But I hace found other numbers online and also some people say the outter main caps torque to 70 and the inners toraue to 65. I thought they all got torqued the same. And last thing is there a main cap torque sequence or can u just start from front of the crank and start moving to the back as I torque the main caps?

Re: engine rebuild

You are correct about the 45 on the rods and 70 on the mains. inner and outer are for 4 bolt main caps, so if you have a 2 bolt main, its 70, 4 bolt main is inner 70 and outer 65. the rod bolts will be 45 regardless of 2 or 4 bolt main.

Re: engine rebuild

There is a proper sequence as well.
DO NOT start at one end of the crank and work your way to the other.

You also need to look up the procedure for setting the thrust bearing.

Re: engine rebuild

Standard bolts (factory) havent decided on thread lube yet. I was planning on just coating the threads with assembly lube or lucas oil additive

Start in the middle and work ur way out on the mains ... U should really b reading ALOT ALOT ALOT of magazine articles and engine building procedures before attempting this feat ... One tiny mistake could mean disaster within the first 5 minutes of break in ! And USE PLASTIGUAGE atleast ! Look up all ur clearances and make sure they are within spec ! I used snap gauges and micrometers tho and blueprinted my whole engine ... I have build sheets on file if interested I could email them and u could print them off
