Vortec head project

ok, I know this thread will be like beating a dead horse for some but I wanna put 98 350 vortec heads onto my 350 tbi. I've been searching a lot of threads but haven't found what I'm looking for. I am looking for kind of a step by step process of what has to be done to make this work. It's a 350 solid lifter motor from '89 that I built 2 years ago, I have a complete vortec engine on the shop floor with low miles, and want to do this on the cheap so I want to use as much as possible from the donor motor. Also, I remember seeing posts before about being able to drill and tap the heads to accommodate the original tbi intake but can't remember exactly what had to be done. anyone have any links that can help me out? also would like to convert to roller cam, can I just swap out all the parts from the donor motor and bolt them into my block? thanks in advance.

Just use the vortec heads and do not use a tbi intake they are very restrictive buy a vortec carb intake like a rpm airgap and use a tbi adapter plate on it like the one transdapt makes.

Re: Vortec head project

The bolt holes aren't the only problem with using a regular pattern manifold on vortec style heads.

Re: Vortec head project

So ... you're thinking all you have to do is drill some holes?

Whaddya think NOW? (note the holes already neatly drilled)

Best plan is, get a good 4-bbl intake. If you wanna use TBI on it, just get a TBI adapter as well. Just make sure it's not one of the ones that moves the TB from its factory spot; I think the one to avoid is the Holley one but I could be wrong; it makes it about impossible to get all your cables and lines and whatnot to work.

Converting a non roller to a roller is a fairly expensive project.

Re: Vortec head project

Your 89 block should readily accommodate the factory roller cam stuff. All you need is to find a blown-up motor with that in it. A 96 - 2000 truck would be the perfect target to look for.

Roller rockers, you just go to the store and buy, same as everybody else. Either they're worth the $$$ or not, to YOU. You gotta be th ejudge of that.

Re: Vortec head project

-Use the vortec motor on the floor
-strip it apart till its a long block
-buy an edelbrock manifold or other brand http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...FeJF7AodMjkACw
-reconnect all wires and hoses
-Get a custom chip
Done!

I would recommend doing other performance upgrades while you have it apart but this is the basics.

Re: Vortec head project

would love to use the vortec motor I got, but it would be a damn shame cuz I just built the 350 2 years ago lol. time to do some major pondering on this one lol.......
