Wanting a supercharged motor
Hey folks. Right now my car has pretty much had a new rear end, bracing, panhard bar, driveshaft, loop, bushings, drag shocks, and frame tied. Now I am about ready to start on the motor. I am going to leave my car completely stock as far as interior and air conditioning, power steering, power windows...you get the idea.
Now I have decided that I want this to be a awesome street/strip car. I want it to pull the front wheels at the track.......actually drag the rear bumper if possible. I want the car to turn some serious rpm's and would like to put a blower on it....love that sound!!!!! But what engine do I need to use? I would like to stick with a crate engine if possible, but don't know which way to go. I know the transmission will need to be reworked and that's OK too.
Any ideas?

I don't know how much you think you will spend or what budget you have in mind.
BUT Be prepared to spend some serious cash!!
Engine, Fuel system (lines, pump, & new FI system) Pro-charger F2 w/ air to air intercooler. You are looking at over $15K in just parts and what about the labor!??

Re: Wanting a supercharged motor
You'll definitely want to stick to centrifugal superchargers, otherwise you'll have that old school look with the giant blower and intercooler sitting higher than your roof line. Pulling wheels is going to take a lot of power, I'd imagine it could be done with a 383 and an f2 procharger, but it would probably be easier with something in the 400 cube range.
Could always go LS, theres a guy around here with a DC2 procharged 408 with AFR heads that makes near 1000 if I'm remembering correctly in his Trailblazer SS. But that would raise your overall cost exponentially.

Re: Wanting a supercharged motor
"Dragging the bumper" is all about torque, weight transfer, instant center and traction. I was able to pull the front wheels past the 60' mark for years until I finally got on a track with very good track prep. After putting the car up on the bumper twice, I installed wheelie bars to keep the front end down.

This falls I think into the idea, which is totally wrong, that anyone can walk up to any car, strap in,and drive it.Tons of guys do that in steps in their build and the ones that don't,often get themselves in to serious trouble.Akly has been in the seat for a very, very, long time.I would not even give it a thought to race against him and feel totally safe.

I thought 14s was fast.. then 12s now 10s...
I think If I stapped into an 8 sec car when I was in my 20s.. I would have wrecked it on my first try..

Re: Wanting a supercharged motor
I have been drag racing bikes for 20years and have been driving my brothers drag car on and off for a few years. It runs 6:00 in the 1/8, but that is still pretty quick. It pulls the front wheels, just not as high as I want mine to.

Been running different 9.90 cars for a very long time.
Those outlaw cars scratch builds with all the cert's needed and a power train are in the hundred of thousand dollar range.Pro Mods are about the same if not more.

Why? The object of going fast at the track is to NOT lift the car off the ground for stability, consistency, and control...

Basically just because I want it to. You know, sometimes ya just gotta do something crazy. I definately wouldnt be using all of that power all the time, but on the rare occasion I would like to know that it is there. Plus I just love the sound of a supercharger.

Re: Wanting a supercharged motor
In fact we have done a very long study in practice on the 9.90 cars because we know wheelstands as a waste of power that don't win races.Sooo you spent all this money to have the power available to you and then more or less watch it go up in smoke as the car rises let alone the possible damages a huge wheelstand can and does cause if the car comes down hard.We developed chassis set up's to help prevent that from happening to move the car forward and not up.Even hard up on wheelie bars scrumps off some of the power you already spent for. That is one reason why we paint the wheels of the wheelie bars to see how much time the car was on them and how hard.Ever see a wheel from them with one side flat spotted??.Yep,that does happen.

In a effort NOT to be a thread killer from my post before,I am going to try to breath some life into this thread.
To the op some of the standard qualifying questions used on here all the time is what is the budget??.

Since OP has not replied my guess this is another newbe case of "champagne dreams and a 40 oz. budget".

Re: Wanting a supercharged motor
even a nitrous set-up while cheaper than a blower... it is hard on the motor/drivetrain.. to make the kind of power you are thinking about.. you are looking at a 400-500 hp motor and another 400-500 nitrous..
that amount of laughing gas... LOL o-ring the block and heads Aftermarket block... etc etc etc..
and you have not touched.. the trans, rearend, back halved the car.. etc etc etc
You could easily just build a BBC and make 800-1000 HP N/A
once you got that all sorted out... shoot me PM and we can do some bracket racing.
