Did burnout today then car died
Did burnout today then car died
Hey everyone. Im at a loss for what to do now. Today after work i decided to leave some nice marks on a back road I take. Right when I was done the car died. Now it wont start again...
I let it cool down, checked the antifreeze (full), checked the oil level (right on the low mark), tugged on the spark plug wires but they were still tight. The distributor cap looked fine. Fuel pressure was at 40.
For a few weeks when I drive the car I notice that it skips a little like its either getting too much fuel or not enough, but it was never a problem. It never died on me so I let it go until I could look at it another time. That might be it I dont know.
Now whenever I try to start it, it cranks just fine but it wont turn over. I dont know what else to do or check. The temp gauge doesn't work. There is gas in it too... Maybe some of the camaro pros have some input. If you can help me out that would be awesome. Thanks!
92 z28, fuel injected, 305 tpi. Dont know what else I'm missing. Thanks in advance!

You'll have to do a lot more diagnostics. It could be something simple like a blown fuse. You could also have internal damage.
Trying to guess what went wrong is like calling a doctor on the phone and saying it hurts when I do this.
First thing you should check is to make sure the plugs are firing when the engine cranks over. Multiple ways to check this. I wouldn't offer any more suggestions until then.

So it cranks over but doesn't even try to fire a little?
I'd check the simple things first, it sounds electrical to me. Has an electrical connection come off the distributor, coil, alternator or other sensor? Good luck.

Had the same problem with the Crank and no fire. It was the Positive batt cable connect was barely tightened and was getting hot. Replaced both and no problems now. Hope that helps. Re: Did burnout today then car died
ok thanks. I'll check plugs and fuses tomorrow. All connections seem to be in order. I'll make sure to check everything though. Seems to me like it could be electrical. No telling for sure until I dig in. Thanks for the advice though.

Let us know what you find. My guess is the burnout loosened something that last bit to become disconnected. I hope it is that simple for you (never is for me, lol).
If you find nothing, checking for spark and fuel delivery are next I guess.

Re: Did burnout today then car died
Something similar happened to me, though not after a burnout
. My car had run fine previously, but after working under the hood, I went to start it and it just kept cranking.
If you don't hear the fuel pump winding after you turn the key to "accessory", then you should check the fuel pump fuse. Mine is located next to the battery, right behind the headlight. It might be inside a little black clip/cover.
Hope this helps.

Ok guys, I checked all the fuses and they were all fine. My dad started helping me after this. We then checked for spark at the plug wire (no spark). Then we traced it all the way back to the ignition control module. There was voltage coming in but nothing going out. So we yanked it out and took it to autozone to have it tested. It failed the test. I got a new one and slapped it on and fired it up. It started just like it should. Turns out that module was bad and that was the only problem. No idea what made it fail all of a sudden. It may have gotten too hot. That white grease stuff was there so I don't know. I also learned that my dad is a troubleshooting genius...
Thanks everyone for the advise. I know it was hard to tell what it was without much information. Keep on keeping on.

Yes! The final test is to do another burnout on video to prove to us that it really works!
What did you to with the old ICM? I'd take it apart and poke around, see if you can find/replace the component that died.

Re: Did burnout today then car died
I didn't think about looking a the old one. Never occurred to me. Unfortunately I let the autozone guy throw it out... Next time I guess. Gotta fix all the other problems now that it runs half decent. Next time I go down that road I will bring my gopro and set it up right on the previous marks. Then I'll upload it to youtube and post up the link!

Always keep the spare parts!
They make good trading fodder for idiots like me who can work their way around tiny electrical components.
What's broken in yours may be different than whats broken in mine (if mine were broken) and buying a busted one is much cheaper than buying a new one, and allows you to recoup some money spent on your new one!
I've got so many spare gun parts in my parts box I could probably make a whole rifle or two xD
