weird over heating issue

i know this is not a firebird question but it is a question about a chevy v8. my grandfather has a lifted k10 with this motor http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet-Perf...rentProductId= and it over heats. regardless if he drives it or not it will over heat in the driveway if left running long enough with or without the thermostat. doesnt burn oil and it doesnt use coolant. could the water pump be bad it has a brand new radiator. i had this problem once before in my eclipse and i changed the water pump and it never over heated again.

Yes , the water pump could have a bad impeller , or it could be the wrong pump alltogether . You DO know there are different rotation pumps for the different drive belts ( V belt vs Serpentine) , Yes ? If you have a V belt pump and a serpentine belt , your pump is spinning in the wrong direction and not pumping coolant through the system ....

Re: weird over heating issue

Your local parts store SHOULD be able to tell you. I don't know the part number off the top of my head. I would call them first instead of possibly wasting a trip down there though.

Re: weird over heating issue

Ah lol. Well, I tried looking up a part number and am not having any luck. If you told them it was for a (insert vehicle year and model that had a sbc and v belt set up) then you'd be good but I'm blanking on those at the moment. That's what I had to do.

Re: weird over heating issue

If i were you i'd verify that the fan is turning on (since you havent answered that) before you go changing the water pump.

So a mechanical fan with just a spacer? Do you have a fan shroud? Without one the fan will draw air from all around and not through the radiator as it's supposed to.
