Best Spark Plugs for shorty headers??

I have a 1987 Iroc Z28 Camaro with a 383 Stroker crate motor and a Paxton SN93 Supercharger on it. It has Edelbrock Headers. It also has an MSD ignition and a Super fuel managment system. I just bought this car with all this stuff on it. I want to change the spark plugs and would like to know what would be the best shorty spark plugs to use, that don't foul out easy?

I don't think many spark plug manufacturers make shorty plugs other than Accel.

NGK makes shorty plugs but they're all gasket seat, IIRC. But some of their standard length plugs are still a bit shorter than AC's.

What kind of plugs are in there now? Are these giving you issues?

If you're using factory cast iron heads you might look into a set of Autolite 24 plugs. They're just regular old plugs, but they are built with a semi-shortie porcelain outer. They clear most headers and since they are just regular old street plugs, they last a good long time. The price is unbeatable.

Accell shorties are your other choice (they make them for the tapered-seat, short-reach threads your stock heads require). They're even shorter than the Autolite 24s.

Right now, it has Denso TR20s in it. I think they are fouling on me. When the car is hot and it sits for only a few minutes, then I try to start it back up it doesn't always want to start. It acts like it's flooded. I can smell gas and I have to hold the pedal down to get it start. It never does it when it's cold or If I let sit for a little while. The guy I bought it from said it hasn't had a tune up in a while and could use spark plugs. I need to run a cold plug though because of all the heat the engine produces.

Re: Best Spark Plugs for shorty headers??

Your biggest problem with plug selection will be how close the edelbrock headers fit against the head. Using standard length plugs is possible but will be a pain to service without removing the header. Switching to hookers or hedman headers give a lot better clearance allowing you to run whatever plug you want. Just throwing that option out there. If you don't want to be bothered with changing headers accel header plugs will probably be your best bet.

Re: Best Spark Plugs for shorty headers??

Does anyone think the problem I'm having could be something other than plugs?

You may have leaking injectors.

Do ignition stuff first- plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Then see if it improves or not. You said the PO hadn't tuned it up in a while so take this as a sign from above that it's now time. Ignition parts can look good, test good and still be bad.

I will do the tune up first and see what happens. Thanks for the input, everyone.
