305, boat anchor?

So i know everybody thinks building a 305 is a waste of time but im doing it lol. My car had a blown head gasket when i bought it, so i was gonna leave it in and just throw gaskets at it. Well it kinda snowballed from there. I ported the heads lapped the valves new seals, summit cam basically a rv cam, new lifters and a double roller chain. Edelbrock 600 carb all emissions removed. Flowtech headers flowmaster cat back. Am i too optimistic to want to hihit low 14's. Im gonna do 373's and a shift kit in the 700 r4.

Re: 305, boat anchor?

I imagine its likely you will. More bang for buck with a 350 but a 305 is not a bad engine for the range of hp you are looking for to run low 14s. It should pull that if your cam is enough to do it. Good luck

Re: 305, boat anchor?

Remember trying to sell a cherry std bore 305 at Long Beach swap meet yrs ago asked $50 so it would go fast
People kept asking whats wrong it it? And walked away

So I put it on the tailgate hit D and well......security stopped me mademe load it back on. Same problem happened up the street this time a Sheriff caught me. Couldnt give it away couldnt throw it out

Kinda wish I had it to build a "pretty motor" with a little cam to either DD my 67 or sell it andkeep the beast for another car.

Re: 305, boat anchor?

I had an Lg4 in high school. Swapped in a summit cam maybe 220 duration 455-465 lift if i remember correctly, intake, holley doublepumper, msd ignition, added headers,3in exhaust cat delete and 373 gears. No head work at all and it ran high 14s spinning the tires bad. Some traction and i think it would have dropped several tenths. I hurt a lot of stock automatic mustangs feelings and got accused of having a 350 often. It ran pretty close with the L98 cars that were stock. Having head work im anxious to see how it turns out keep us posted.

Re: 305, boat anchor?

Just don't put anything into it that you would feel bad about throwing in the trash later. Stick to external upgrades that could be swapped onto a 350 or larger motor later. If it's an LG4 you could throw a cheap Summit cam into it to replace the pathetic "peanut cam", but that's about as far as I'd go with a 305 before the call of a larger cube motor becomes too strong.

Re: 305, boat anchor?

Agreed everything but the headwork can be swapped over, i wont cry about chucking the summit cam away later. Thats my plan is to buy a used 350 and put it on the stand after i get this one back in. I just want to enjoy the car for now til my budget will allow the 350 to be completed.
