Looking at buying a 3rd gen but.....
Looking at buying a 3rd gen but.....
If anyone would be able to take a look at this that has more knowledge about the 3rd gen I'd appreciate it...

I'm going to look at it friday but i have a few questions that hopefully someone on here might be able to answer.
Like is it just me or is the alternator not where it should be. Or would the mods that he is claiming move the alternator? It looks clean and its a good price but I just want to make sure that its the correct engine, and I know the only way to really be sure is to check the cast number. If anyone could give me some advice when checking it out I would appreciate it.
First thing would be to replace that sorry excuse for an air intake... especially with an upgraded throttle body..
I have owned a 4th Gen WS6, sold it bought a SRT-8 Challenger, but now I have orders so going to sell the Chally and buy something that will sit well in storage and wait for me to have some fun with. (paying 600 a month for a car your not driving doesnt appeal to me) Thank you all for looking and letting me pick at the 3rd gen masters brains... lol
Edit* guess I jumped the gun posting this here, I guess it should have been in the Originality thread...my bad

Re: Looking at buying a 3rd gen but.....
Well, you mentioned originally and that looks harder to restore than the engine would be. For me personally there are a couple of reasons. Resale and replacement parts. I wouldn't mind one actually since you don't have to remove the T-Tops and store them, plus dealing with the bag etc, but it's not original. I think most Thirdgen guys would pick that out right off the bat. At least I did.
Also, you don't know how well it was done. I think there is a key structural piece that runs through the center so they could build them for either T-Top or hard top at the factory. A sunroof would cut out that part of the roof structure. You also don't know if it's loaded up with bondo etc.
It looks like a beautiful car otherwise.

I've been reading up about how to tell if its an original GTA, but I just dont know enough about 3rd gens to make sure about all of it. Thank you for your reply.

In the eingine pic, the alternator is supposed to be right behind the blue band on the upper rad hose. Not sure where it is now.
Sunroof is a major turnoff because everyone knows it was cut into the roof after it left the factory.
Power antenna is missing. Steering wheel leather is likely ripped. Does he have the original radio? Why does is need to be boosted to start? Look at the booster cable on the right side strut tower. That's a horrible spot to place it, the ground stap isn't designed to carry that much current.
"needs minor tune up" means it runs like crap and he doesn't know why. If new plugs would smooth it our he would have already done that. Personally, I would not be interested in a modified car. There's just too many variables that cannot be easily answered. For the same money, you can buy a stock one that will be much easier to deal with.
On the positive side, it looks like a real GTA from the pics, but can only be verified if the SPI sticker in the glove box has code Y84. Also, by the looks of the strut towers and the undercarriage, it appears to be rust free.
Do your homework, and good luck!

Thanks for the reply eseibel67. I did notice that jumper cable. Hopefully when I look at it tomorrow morning it'll look a little better. As for mods, its fairly hard to find an untouched V8 3rd gen or even 4th gen. Ill be seeing how far he will go down in price based on how everything looks to me. And I will be looking for that sticker.
