Gas Tanks The Same For All Thirdgens?

I did some searching and couldn't find the answer. I need to replace my gas tank. Are all thirdgen tanks interchangeable except for maybe the 1LE?

Thanks

Re: Gas Tanks The Same For All Thirdgens?

a suggestion, don't buy a "spectra" brand replacement. they are quite cheap ,and do not fit right out of the box. I would get a good used one. as for 82-92 being all the same, it appears so.

Thanks for the reply Rusty. My car has an aftermarket tank in it now that the PO put in. I suspect it is a Spectra. I'm going to try to find a good original tank to put back in.

I see you are from Knoxville. What part of town do you live in?

A question for the more knowledgeable.

Spectra list 2 different tanks for the thirdgens. one with a pan in the tank and one without.

Did the fuel injected cars only get the pan in the tank or was it a rolling change?

ok, my knowledge is this. go ahead with a spectra tank, BUT youll be sorry you did. a total waste of time and money. as for internal diffrences there are only two that im aware if .the "1-LE" and everything else. your money will be better spent finding a good used tank.

In 90 or 91 gm started putting the baffled "1LE" tank in all the cars so start your search there.

Re: Gas Tanks The Same For All Thirdgens?

I'm picking up a tank out of a '91 camaro this weekend so it should have the baffles. Can I use the fuel pump, sending unit, etc. from the tank in my '89 in the '91 tank?

the hole that the sending unit goes in appears to be the same. obviously, the sending units are different.depending what fuel system you have (carb,TBI,TPI)

So TBI and TPI openings are different, eh? I did not know that. Learn something new every day around here.

Re: Gas Tanks The Same For All Thirdgens?

Is there a part number, tag or any kind of coding that will help you determine which tank you are getting in the 90-91's? I'd like to put one of the baffled tanks in my 87 but want to be sure what I'm getting before I go through the trouble.

Re: Gas Tanks The Same For All Thirdgens?

Didn't get the tank over the holidays. The guy getting the rearend didn't get it pulled. It will be a few weeks.

So as long as the 90/91 tank is from a TPI car, the sending unit and fuel pump from my 89 TPI car should work in it? Am I understanding this correctly?

Even with the rear out of the car, you need alot of ground clearance to remove/install tank without bending the filler neck.

Re: Gas Tanks The Same For All Thirdgens?

I complained to GM, when my 89 Formula 350 was new, that on long hard right turns my engine would cut out if tank was less than 1/4 full. They would not admit that this was a design problem that the 1LE baffled tank solved. Once the car slowed down in the turn (less g-force) the engine would come back to life and if I accelerated again it would sputter and die! Tried unsuccessfully to get them to upgrade me to a 1LE tank. They said it was only necessary for racing.

I've experienced this twice with my T/A. Got my attention the first time it happened.

Re: Gas Tanks The Same For All Thirdgens?

Hey Dave,
I LOVE on/off ramps!
The feeling of g-force is like a drug to me. (haha)
One of the few places you can test the capabilities of these cars... although I did get pulled over once when a highway cop was parked out of sight on an off ramp posted at 25mph. I buzzed by him at about 55! Guess he was pissed I went by so fast he couldn't read my sticker!

I know! There's a particular series of ramps that I take when I drive to work...have only driven the T/A to work a couple of times, but taking those ramps is a hoot! By far the best handling car I've ever owned.
