305 loud pop & oil everywhere

hi guys first time posting long time fan & member of the forum. I have a 1985 chevy camaro berlinetta with a 5.0L 305 sbc. i just did a manifold and carb swap to all edelbrock. and also when ahead and did a HEI MSD distributor. i changed all that out and put the #1 cylinder on TDC and tried to start the car ........ its turn over 3 or 4 time and then got a loud BOMB and oil liking from the bottom of the car ..... anyone know what it could be ..... I am think its the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket but i could be wrong ????

thanks for the help guys

Can you turn the motor over by hand, or socket and bar on crank pulley. Just checking to see if motor had some catastrophic failure.. Don't force it, should turn easy if it's going to move.
As far as the noise could be a 180 out dist and is backfiring through intake.
What dist gear type did you use?
Is it a factory cam?

Re: 305 loud pop & oil everywhere

I would pop it out, put motor to TDC number 1 piston. Then put dist back in pointing the distributer rotor at number one piston. That should be close enough to ensure timing is in ballpark to dial car in with timing light.

Was it alot of oil pouring out or just drips here and there.

Can't you jack it up to find where the oil came from?

Re: 305 loud pop & oil everywhere

I'd locate the source of the leak before doing anything else to it.

Oil filter or even the Oil psi sending unit.. Could even have a rear intake leak

Re: 305 loud pop & oil everywhere

I agree with the car being 180 out. Years ago the exact same thing happened to me, I was 180 out loud pop and oil got all over everything. It was weird, the oil obviously came from somewhere, but I couldnt trace it, and it never leaked again. Just had enough force. Turn the motor over by hand with a finger in the number one spark plug hole and wait till you feel air. You'll see the timing mark coming at this point, keep turning to zero. See where your distributor/rotor is facing, if it is facing 6 you are 160 out. Take out distributor and face it to number 1.

Re: 305 loud pop & oil everywhere

Set the old oil filter on a bench, look at the top carefully. The dome should have a flat spot in the middle. If it's completely rounded then it probably got over pressurized.

Re: 305 loud pop & oil everywhere

Is it possible you accidentally put two oil filters gaskets on? Sometimes the old gasket sticks to the block and if your not careful and just put the new filter on it will blow out. Easy mistake to make.
