Vats and Starter enable solenoid Bypass
Vats and Starter enable solenoid Bypass
So the story starts with my friend having a 1990 Chevy Camaro RS with a TBI 305. Every once in a while the VATS would kick in and it wouldnt start but after a few tries it would recognize and start right up. About a week ago it done it at the gas pumps and wouldnt start back at all and his steering wheel was locked so he took a screwdriver and hammer and knocked the keyswitch out. He was really mad and ended up trying to haul it off for scrap metal so I gave him $300 and kept it for myself thinking I could do some research and get it going again. I followed all the instructions to a T and bypassed the VATS with resistors and almost have it exact with the ohms the key puts out. The security light goes off now when you turn it to the ON position but does nothing when you try to crank it. I then bypassed the starter solenoid in the kick panel on the drivers side and that also made no difference. Hopefully one of you guys can chime in and tell me where to go from here.

It should crank with the starter enable relay connecter jumped .
Test the two fat outside wires for 12v on the connecter when you turn the key to start the car.
One of those should show 12v. If not your problem is upstream from there. If it has power than the problem is down stream.
I had a few major problems with my car and could not find them including what I believe was a defective VATS module. I finally did this and kick myself for not doing it earlier.
Fixed everything.

Re: Vats and Starter enable solenoid Bypass
Mine did the same thing. Even stopped coming on at all.
All I'm saying is if you want to eliminate VATS removing any chance its plying a roll than Tuned Performance is the one to talk to.
He is the only one that I have found that has made it affordable for the common guy.
Its listed at $30.00. I don't know all the details so talking with him using a PM will fill those in.
The only reason I mention this is because I fought two major gremlins for a long time before I had VATS totally removed.
It fixed both problems instantly.
It was either a defective VATS modal or a bad EPROM. Or both.....
Any way, maybe this info will help others also.
